Animal Sacrifices

CLC = Christian Lacking Compassion, AR = Animal Rights

CLC: Even God called for animal sacrifices!

AR: There are passages in the bible that appear to request animal sacrifice.  However, the following passages take exception to those passages

AR: Isa 1:11, "I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs, goats"

AR: Hosea 8:13, "They sacrifice flesh for the sacrifices of mine offerings, and eat it; but the Lord accepteth them not;

AR: Hosea 6:6: "I will have mercy not sacrifice; knowledge of God, not Holocausts."

AR: The Gospel of Matthew reports on two occasions on which Jesus reminded the people that Hosea had called for an end to sacrificial worship {Ref. 1, page 49}

AR : God may have indeed wanted sacrifices of wealth in order to demonstrate one's faith. To interpret that God wants us to torture and kill his creatures in order to demonstrates ones faith is today considered misguided. We do not torture and kill animals today to show our faith, and sacrifices of the past should not be used to justify torture, abuse, and killing animals today.

AR: "It was the slaughter of animals, in the name of God, that led Jesus to the only aggressive confrontation of his ministry. That confrontation took place at a Jerusalem temple where Christ took direct action against evils of sacrifice. He freed the animals who were about to be slaughtered and disrupted the entire procedure that surrounded sacrificial rites." (Ref. 1, page 52) [Interpretation of John 2:13-16]

AR: In Gen. 22:13, Abraham sacrificed a ram rather than his son Isaac, not to satisfy God's needs; but because of Abraham's belief that sacrifice was necessary. Abraham had gone to Moriah to worship in this way ,  to him it would have been sacrilegious to not perform a sacrifice. At that point in time, Abraham was incapable of understanding that the sacrifice of any flesh-human or non human--was an abomination to God. Ref. [1] page 34.

AR: Unfortunately, in terms of spiritual evolution, it took over a thousand years between Abraham's rejection of human sacrifice and Isaiah's prophecies against animal sacrifice. (Ref. 1 Page 35)

AR: Judaism never required sacrifice; it was always understood that sacrifice was an abomination to the God of Israel. {Ref. 1 page 35}

AR: Just as the beginning of Judaism was marked by the rejection of human sacrifices, so the beginning of Christianity was marked by the rejection of animal sacrifice. {Ref. 1, page 49}

AR: There are passages in the bible in which it appears that God condoned slavery or caused or called for men to be killed. That does not give us permission to enslave or kill man. Similarly, because God instructed certain individuals to kill animals for survival purposes, that does not give us the right to deny his dietary guidance in Gen. 1:29
