Formal and Beautiful: Strapless Silhouettes

This all-over-lace longline uses its structure as part of the ornamentation. It would probably not be very comfortable when worn seated, because it has no padded waistband. However, its intended customers would probably not spend a lot of time sitting in the easily-wrinkled dresses often worn over such foundations (note that the model does not seem very thrilled.) Still, it'a a delight to behold with its bold lace flowers and scalloped trim.

"The problem I have with these things is that they never stay up for more than a half-hour at a time, at least on a real-world body. You feel like you're losing your clothes. I mean, it's like every so often I have to go to the little girls' [room] and wiggle around while pulling up on the top. If someone saw me doing this, they'd fall apart laughing. And it's not just me, either. Ask any of my friends! Don't ever mention 'strapless dress' to me. I'll never buy another one, unless maybe it's on sale. Maybe."

Here's another white, delicate concoction by Lady Marlene, which is frequently advertised in bridal magazines. I'm not totally sure what the square cutaway between the cups is for, especially since any dress cut in a similar manner would undoubtedly reveal the bra readily; it is probably there to allow freer movement and keep the cups seated fully against the breasts. The back is cut very low to accomodate revealing gowns. You can't ignore the pretty floral lacework on the sheer netting - it's a favorite of ours, admittedly.

"When I got married, I wore this strapless I borrowed from my mother - really! I mean, I wasn't about to go buy something I'd never wear again. It was like a comedy, though. I got half-way down the aisle in this gorgeous dress with a cathedral-length train, and I suddenly felt a stay let go! I kid you not - it slid up and out of the neckline of that dress, not all the way, but you could see it there, just sticking out. The top of the stay had punched through where it was sewed down - you know how they are. The fabric was rotten in places, I guess. Anyway, when I got to the front of the church, with my back to everyone but my husband and the minister, I rolled my eyes, grinned, and quickly pulled it out. Nothing else happened, and I think my maid-of-honor kept the stay as a souvenir. I'm not sure what happened to the bra, but my mother never asked for it back."

This regal-looking strapless longline has satin panels with lacework over in the front. The cup tops are trimmed with an opaque lace edging, while the cups themselves are smooth and seamless. It's really a luxurious garment, and more practical looking than the two above examples.
