Getting Started Imaging
Unless you have boatloads of money to burn, I would recommend that you follow the advice I received and accepted, which is to start humbly. Of all the aspects of Amateur Astronomy, this is the area, which is unquestionably the easiest to consume the largest amount of your kid’s inheritance. Since I have not reached any sort of pinnacle of success in my imaging to date, I still have a very clear memory of my first steps and missteps.

Start with and supplement what you currently have: What kind of equipment do you currently have? Digital camera, SLR, video camcorder, web cam? All of these have been used successfully to produce inspiring astro-images in combination with some free software available on the web, so it makes sense to see just how committed you are to this aspect of the hobby. Understanding that if you decide you are committed, your spouse may decide to have you committed. That notwithstanding, if you find yourself caught up for hours with the acquisition and processing of a fairly awful image, and then show the questionable results to everyone you know, then you are probably hooked and ready to proceed with caution to more sophisticated forms of imaging.

My efforts have taken me in the following areas.

1.)    Imaging with a commercial digital camera
2.)    Imaging with an SLR (film) camera
3.)    Imaging with a low-lux security camera
