If you have never been to a star party, then you need to make a point to set a date and do so. Many of these event draw hundreds of amateur astronomers, vendors, professional astronomers and speakers. You will probably meet a few legends along the way as well, such as John Dobson, Stephan O'Meara and Al Naglar to name just . a few. Many sponsor swap meets and frequently the vendors discount their wares. It is also the best time to check out some of those accessories you have been eyeing, and see them in action.

This is the site for the famous Texas Star Party. You need to pre-register to guarantee a spot. They are limiting the attendance to 600 this year in order to ensure that the Prude ranch facilities are adequate.
