M 104 - The Sombrero Galaxy
M104 (NGC 4594) is famous for it's prominant dark lane, which looks like the brim of a hat. Mechain discovered it in 1781, William Herschal was the first to note it's dust lane. It resides in the Virgo galaxy, well away from the main portion of the Coma-Virgo superecluster, but is still a member of that group. It is estimated to be 65 million light years distant with a stunning absolute magnitude of -23.5, or equal in luminosity to about 210 billion suns (about 16 times as bright as our own Milky Way galaxy). It's diameter is estimated at 135,000 light years.
