M8 - The Lagoon Nebula
NGC 6522 - Contains a rich open cluster (NGC 6530) embedded in the nebula, which is divided by a broad dark lane. This nebula is illuminated by very hot O-type stars, which flouresce the gas and radiate 44 times as much high energy ultraviolet light than visual light. The Western half contains a star (9 Sagittarii - outside this images field of view) that is 23,000 times as bright as our sun. It is about 5,200 light years from earth and roughly 60 X 38 light years in expanse.
