Comet C/2000 WM1 LINEAR was first imaged with the Starlight Xpress MX5 CCD on a cold November night with the Moon nearby, which required sky background illumination to be removed from the image (see Image Processing). The conditions prevented clear detection of a comet tail. The comet was on it's predicted path with predicted magnitude of 5.3.

Comet C/2000 WM1 LINEAR imaged in Aries at 22:16 hours UT on 26 November 2001. Super-Takumar lens with LP and IR filters. Integrated images of 1,1 and 2 minutes. Field of view is approx. 4 by 3 deg. and image left to right and inverted. Theta Aries at bottom right is magnitude 5.6

The comet was further imaged on a misty 2 December night during it's passage through Cetus. Moon background illumination again needed to be removed from the image but a comet tail was now evident. The comet was on it's predicted course as seen from the Skymap. The predicted magnitude of 4.8 seems inconsistent with the image. The comet was not visible in 10 by 50 binoculars.

Finally, the comet was imaged on 8 December, while still in Cetus, but rapidly moving below the horizon to the Southern Hemisphere. The comet was barely above the tree line. It was "Bon Voyage" to Comet WM1 LINEAR until return in late February 2002.
