NGC 7293 - The Helix Nebula
NGC 7293 - The Helix nebula is one of the closest planetary nebula to our Solar system, about 300 light years distant. It is located in the constellation Aquarius, and is the largest planetary in apparent size (it did not fit in my FOV at f/3.3). It subtends 12' x 16', or about 1/2 the apparent width of the moon. However, it has a very low surface brightness making it a tough target for visual and even difficult to image.
Image Details
Telescope: Meade 10" LX200 GPS f/10 with focal reducer at f/3.3
Camera: Starlight Xpress MX7c single shot color CCD
Image: 5- 4 minute S2K guided and 22 - 45 second unguided images for 26.5 minutes effective image time (not nearly enough). Acquired in and color synthesized in AstroArt, with final color porcessing in Photoshop
Location: Fort Griffin State park - November 11 - new moon, temperatures in the 60's under dark 5.6 magnitude skies. Clouds moved in putting a halt to my imaging. This object need at least three times this exposure.
