M66 CCD ASTROPHOTOGRAPHY
Homepage & Index
M66 (NGC 3627) in Leo is a Sb type ( as discussed in Galaxies  ) galaxy . It has as  close neighbours M65 and NGC 3628, which comprise the Leo Triplet or M66 Group located some 35 million light years away. M66 clearly has deformed spiral arms, probably because of an encounter with it's neighbouring galaxies. Three supernovae have been reported ( 1973R, 1989B and 1997bs) in this galaxy.

The image captured on  2 May, 2002 compares favourably with other amateur captured images.
M66 in Leo captured on 2 May, 2002 using the 200mm Schmidt-Newtonian at prime focus with no filters. The sum of 3 two minute images on a mixed clear to cloudy night, when Comet WM1 LINEAR at mag. 11 could not be found at its predicted position.
