Georgia to Maine, Part VI
GEORGIA TO MAINE!
7/23/00   Thousand Islands, NY   Plant and Lindy called and said they are having a good time visiting with Lindy's aunt.  They have done some fishing in the St. Lawrence River, and even drove over to Niagra Falls where they rode on The Maid of the Mist.  Plant reports that his foot is starting to feel better and the swelling has gone down.  He will see a doctor on 7/27/00 to have it x-rayed and see how it is healing.  Hopefully, it will be good news!
7/27/00 Eagle Bay, NY  Plant called and reported his foot is A-okay!  He is off of the crutches and no longer needs to wear his foot brace.  He and Lindy will be spending the weekend in the Adirondacks fishing, canoeing, and of course, walking.  Plant is going to walk to start to get  back in shape to hit the AT.  Next week, they will start heading north and do some sight seeing while heading to the New Hampshire/Maine border.  They believe they will  be able to start hiking the AT in Maine around  8/7/00.
8/2/00 Freeport, Maine Plant called today and reported he and Lindy are camping in Freeport and are enjoying the sights of  Maine.  They camped at a lake and listened to the Loons all night, went to L.L. Bean, and went on a whale watching cruise where they saw a Minke Whale.  Plant says his foot is feeling okay.  They have been walking, about five miles daily, to get  back in shape and test out Plant's foot.  So far, so good!  Hopefully, they will be donning their back packs soon!
8/5/00  Email from Plant and Lindy  Plant and Lindy went on a boat tour to Machias Seal Island off the far eastern coast of Maine with Bold Coast Charters.   There are 4000 Puffins, 6000 Terns, and about 400 Razorbills on the island.  They were put in a blind and bird watched, with some of the Puffins coming within  four feet of them!  They also saw seals, about 200 of them, and Minke Whales and  Harbor Porpoises.  They had a wonderful time and state that their captain, Andy Patterson did a wonderful job.  (To see more pictures, follow the link below to the Photo Page Too!)

Plant reports that they have been doing a lot of  walking,  that he has little or no pain in his foot, and  it feels better every day.  So tomorrow, 8/6/00, they are off to Mt. Katahdin!  They hope to be able to climb it, weather  permitting, and can't wait to get back on the AT!

8/7/00 Somewhere in the middle of Maine  Plant and Lindy called and said they successfully climbed Mt. Katahdin yesterday!   They said it was a hard hike, they took about 9 hours to hike up and back, for a distance of about 10 miles.  Along the way, and at the top!, they met other thru-hikers who were completing their AT hike.  They also took photos which will be on their  way soon!  Earlier in the day they saw a moose eating in a pond at Baxter State Park.  Although Plant has seen moose in the wild before, it was a first for Lindy.  They are wrapping up a few odds and ends and will take off from the base of  Katahdin  heading south on the AT on 8/10/00!  Plant's foot is fine, he had no trouble hiking the mountain, and both Plant and Lindy are sporting new boots which they report feel great!  Sign the guest book and wish them well as they begin the next part of their journey!
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.  I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practice resignation, unless it was quite necessary.  I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan-like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and...if it were sublime, to know it be by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."  Henry David Thoreau
