About the Class of 1952 . . .

On June 4, 1952, thirty-one members of the graduating class of Avery High School, Charleston, South Carolina, were awarded their diplomas. There were twenty-five young women and six young men in the class. Fifty-two years have passed since that momentous occasion. Addresses are known for eighteen persons. Four persons are known to be deceased. We will continue to locate and to communicate with all living members of our class, and encourage you to assist us toward our goal of reuniting with them. Colonel Andrew R. Bland, Jr., at Avery, was President of the 1952 Senior Class, President of the Student Council, President of the Choral Society, and Captain of the Football Team.  He retired from active duty in the U.S. Army on July 31, 1981, after almost 25 years of distinguished service and after having been the recipient of numerous awards and decorations.  Colonel and Mrs. Bland (the former Kathleen Babridge), who have been married for 43 years, live in Houston, TX.  They are the parents of five children -- Kyna, Dana and Sharon, graduates of North Texas State University; Karla, a graduate of the University of North Texas; and Andrew, III, a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
The Reverend Charles H. Brown received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in social studies from South Carolina State University.  He received a commission in the Regular Army and was on active duty for four and one-half years.  Subsequently, he was employed in the Library of Congress and, in 1963, he returned to Charleston and taught at C.A. Brown and Burke High Schools for 27 years.  He received the Master of Divinity Degree in 1987 from Cummin's Theological Seminary and was ordained into the Christian ministry in Philadelphia, PA, during the 200th Anniversary Celebration of the A.M.E. Church.  He has been the Pastor of numerous churches in South Carolina and, currently, is Pastor of Calvary A.M.E. Church, Edisto Island, SC.  He and his wife of 33 years, Dorothy, live in Charleston, SC.
William J. Clement, AIA, was an honor graduate at Avery and was graduated, cum laude (first in his class), from the Howard University School of Engineering and Architecture in 1957, with a degree in architecture.  In 1961, he joined the Charleston firm of H.A. DeCosta Company, General Contractors, where he served as Vice President from 1965 to 1983.  Since 1983, he has been employed by the South Carolina State Budget and Control Board as Associate State Engineer, 1983; Deputy State Engineer, 1985; State Engineer, 1986; Assistant Director, Office of General Services, 1986 to the present.  In 1958, he was married to Saundra Williams and they became the parents of children, William and Steven.  In 1973, he and "Peggy" Merrell were married.  They have one son, John.  The Clements live in North Charleston, SC.
Colonel Cynthia Marie Coulter Houston-Brickey was Salutatorian of her Avery High School graduating class.  She earned the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from North Carolina Central University, after having received her nursing diploma from Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing.  Her master's degree was received from the University of North Carolina's School of Public Health.  She was married to William T. Houston.  Later, she married Captain William A. Brickey, now deceased.  Her professional career has included clinical nursing, education, administration and management, and consulting in private, governmental and military organizations. Since retiring, after 39 years in nursing-related activities, she focuses her energy on her Internet marketing and several other businesses.  Col. Houston-Brickey lives in Hertford, NC.
