Ban the Brick
Two exciting all star games at St. Albans Saturday night...Game 1 was largely comprised of underclassmen and was won by the East 116-113 over the West. Mamadi Diane (DeMatha, 6-4, Jr.) was the East MVP with 19 points. Marcus Ginyard (O'Connell, 6-5, Jr.) was the West MVP with 17 points. Both players provided lots of exciting plays.

In the second game (all seniors)...The West prevailed, 128-126 in OT. The East MVPs were Chris Vann (Gar-Field) with 25 points and Fred Stanback (O'Connell) with 29 points. The West MVPs were Peter Prowitt (Potomac School) with 22 and Erik Smith (O'Connell) with 22.

I thought Travis Lay (Bullis) was outstanding for the East squad. Stanley Hodge, Antwan Harrison (both Gonzaga), Ernie Lomax (O'Connell) and Woodlawn's Jason Goody were exceptional too.

Rudy Gay and two other Spalding players were no-shows. Brian Johnson turned it on when he wanted to and even stroked a few perimeter shots. The kids really appeared to be having fun out there. I think my favorite part was seeing the smiles on the kids' faces as for a night they tossed out their rivalries and played as friends. It was nice to see Gonzaga and O'Connell and DeMatha having a good time together.

The O'Connell kids seemed to have more fun on the court than I've ever seen them. It was great.
