When Jerome Habel a former member of the 2003 class decided to play with the D.C. Blue Devils this summer, no one really knew about him. He was playing on a team with big names like Brian Johnson, Isaiah Swann and Eric Price.
But things changed for the 6-9, 200-pound Habel at the Peach Jam when he displayed his shot-blocking and rebounding skills to college coaches.
Prior to the tournament, VCU was his primary suitor. Now Habel has schools like Arizona, St. John's, Florida and Cincinnati as his top four schools.
``I want to fit in and be comfortable," he told PrepStars.com. "Distance doesn't really matter and I don't plan to get a lot of playing time right away. I just want to get better."
Habel transferred from Paint Branch to nearby Walt Whitman High in Bethesda, Maryland midway through his junior season and decided to re-classify in the Class of 2004 at the beginning of this past year.
``That was kind of tough for me to come back for another year," Habel said. "But I know if I went to college now, it would be tough for me being my size. I just didn't think I'd be ready."
Habel, who still needs to put on some weight, averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks this past year at Walt Whitman.
