Commentary, anecdotes, scrapbook

A self-made success who worked from an early age to pay for his education, Simon at 17 was employed as an usher at the RKO 86th St. theater in Manhattan. It happened that two of his fellow ushers were Patrick Sullivan—who would achieve fame in Hollywood as leading man Barry Sullivan—and Alfonso Roberto D'Abruzzo, later known as Robert Alda, star of "The Gershwin Story" and father of Alan Alda of "Mash" fame. The three became fast friends in New York, a friendship that endured in Los Angeles until the deaths of the two actors. Simon gave the eulogy at Sullivan's funeral in 1994.
