Lights in the Darkness: Resisters to the Nazi Regime
 Introduction

When one traditionally thinks of resistance movements, a cohesive image of partisans often comes to mind.  German resistance to Nazism  deviates from this image.   These resisters were not fighting an unpopular foreign occupier, they were  going against the tide of public opinion within a totalitarian state. The smallest acts of dissidence could meet with the severest punitive actions.  Resisters faced the threat of  incarceration, torture, and death.  They  were motivated by  widely differing philosophies and objectives.  One thing they all seemed to share in common was a general aversion to National Socialism.

The site does not attempt to minimize the role that  many Germans played in collaborating with and supporting the Nazi regime.  Instead, the purpose of this site is to call attention to the courage of those individuals who chose to make a stand against National Socialism and address some of their motivations.  In addition, I have  provided links to other sites that may be of interest to students and others interested in this fascinating period of history.

This project will attempt to illuminate the supreme act of sacrifice that many German resisters made.  They gave their lives in an effort to fight the perverse bio-medical Nazi machine and they did so against the tide of public opinion.   The fact that they were willing to be labeled as traitors in their efforts to hinder the Nazi regime is a rare and noble quality that must forever be commemorated.
