Eric Hinds Memorial Scholarship
The Eric Hinds Memorial Scholarship was established by the Alumni Association after the sudden death of Eric Hinds an alumnus of the Beacon House and resident of our Sober Living Center.  Eric demonstrated the true spirit of what it meant to be a sober and recovering individual in his daily life by his selfless acts of kindness, his humility and his service to the alcoholics and addicts everywhere.  The Scholarship is reserved for men who are either attending school or are beginning their studies and need additional financial support in order to succeed in their field of choice.  For more information contact the Alumni at beaconalumni@aol.com

Spotlight on...Chris Speigelman
Chris Spiegelman - In his own words...Prior to coming to Beacon House I was living in Orange County, homeless.  I heard about the Beacon House from my brother--in-law    while I was in jail . He attended the Sunday Breakfast at the Beacon House.  After several attempts to gain admittance to the program I was admitted having spent three months waiting at the Bell Shelter.  I was only 20 years old.
While he was in the program I was taught the lessons I had never learned growing up.  I was taught the basic principles of successful living while practicing them in a safe environment.  I learned how to communicate with others (with great effort) and learned that I am a human being capable of doing anything I wanted to do (good or bad).  The House provided a safe environment to protect me from myself long enough to build a foundation in Alcoholics Anonymous and provided a positive living situation while building an educational foundation as well.  Although many lessons have been learned since my departure, and I'm sure many more await.  The House gave me a chance to learn and practice the basic rudiments of positive living which I lacked.  It is the lessons I learned in the Primary Program that have carried me as far as i have gone and continue to open new doors but most importantly, allow them to stay open instead of slamming the door shut.
My educational journey started at Harbor Occupational Center.  From there I decided to go to L.A. Harbor College.  I took computer repair and networking classes and I also took several general education courses.  I had no intentions of getting a degree or transferring.  After a while I found out I was good at school and by the time I earned my certificates in computer repair and networking I had made the decision to transfer.  Initially I planned to go to Cal State Long Beach but my grade point average was 3.7 and I was a Phi Theta Kappa All California Academic Team.  I also completed the Honors program with straight A's.  I applied to the four University of California campuses and was accepted at all four.  I decided to attend U.C. Berkley and I am majoring in Psycology.  Thank Beacon House.
