Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy
Kathy Bates
Kathy Bates, the talented actress who played Evelyn, was born in Tennessee on June 28, 1948. She was primarily a stage actress, and won and OBIE award for her work in "Frankie and Johnny at the Clare De Lune". But when the play was made into a movie, she was passed over for the part, and Michelle Pfieffer was chosen instead. This has happened to three of the four stars of "Fried Green Tomatoes".

She won an Oscar in 1990 for her portrayal of the obsessive Annie Wilkes in "Misery" in which her character rescues a famous author, (James Caan) and holds him prisoner in her house. After she won her Oscar, she found constant work in movies, making at least one movie each year in the 90's.

Some of her more famous roles include Molly Brown in "Titanic", and Libby Holden in "Primary Colors" a role which earned her another Oscar nomination.

She has been on "Inside the Actor's Studio", and last December was in "About Schmidt", with Jack Nicholson, a role which earned her yet ANOTHER Oscar nomination. Go Kathy!

She was recently finished a guest starring stint on "Six Feet Under" and will be in several movies in 2003 and 2004.

Jessica Tandy
Jessica Tandy was born in England in 1909. Like Kathy Bates, she was mostly a stage actress, and won a Tony for her Blanche in "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1947. Also like Kathy Bates, when it came time to make the movie version, Vivian Leigh was chosen to play the part instead. In 1945, she married fellow actor Hume Cronyn.

She had steady theatre work throughout her life, and starred in many plays with Hume Cronyn, like "The Gin Game". She was also in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds". In the 80's, she made some movies, including "*batteries not included", "Cocoon", and her Oscar winning role in 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy".

Her work as Ninny Threadgoode in "Fried Green Tomatoes" got her another Oscar nomination.

She died on September 11, 1994, of Ovarian Cancer.
