Opinions, essays, and my fond farewell
What is Fried Green Tomatoes Really About?
I hope that this site has provided a potential Fried Green Tomatoes fan with a little bit of background on the subject. But it doesn't end here. No way. There are more Fried Green Tomatoes websites on the web than one might expect, and I've only scratched the surface of all the information they cover.

Because of space and my limited web-savviness, I didn't go into much detail about the plot of the story. The plot, however, is a key factor in both the movie and the book. :-) In fact, it is much more complicated than I have suggested and has sparked many in- depth discussions, arguments, and analyzations, some of which are provided for your benefit on this page.

I hope that, if this website has convinced you to read or reread the book or watch or rewatch the movie, that you will try to find out some more about this fine story.

Here are some links to get you on your way:

This site has a lot of writing, and it sort of skips around. But, in addition to "Fried Green Tomatoes", it also discusses "Thelma and Louise", "The Color Purple", and some other movies I like. Discussion of these films begins in the "Lilith Returns: New Places in the Heart" section, further down the page.
Time for Links!

This site has a little of everything, including more essays, a message board, and tomato-related products.

An interesting comparison on the two films, and the different ways they portray lesbians.

And examination of the importance of time in the book.

This one is my personal favorite out of the provided links. One of the best scenes in the movie and the book is a scene in which Idgie and Ruth go on a picnic, and Idgie reaches into a beehive to retrieve some honey for Ruth.

This is a very interesting essay about what it really means to be a
"beecharmer", and why it's so important to the development of Idgie and Ruth's relationship.

This site, although not related to Fried Green Tomatoes, is cool. It was made by my friend Nora, and if you like Nicole Kidman, this is the place for you. Also features a link to my site!

This is an essay comparing and contrasting Fried Green Tomatoes and The Joy Luck Club.
This site has a summary/review of the movie, and if you click on "more", you get full cast, people's opinions, and quotes.
This is the review I most agree with.
Another good review
This site only features a little bit about Fried Green Tomatoes, but it has summaries of lots of other films, some of which I've seen and liked.
The whole script, every word!
*Note: It sometimes doesn't tell you who's talking, so it might get a little confusing.

FGT is included in this extensive database, although I didn't really like what they said about it. Anyway, take a look and decide for yourself.

This is a review from Planetout, another gay movie site. It takes a while to get to Fried Green Tomatoes (most of the review is about Basic Instinct), and when it does, the opinion is not a favorable one. But here it is anyway, so you can become a well-rounded FGT fan, hearing all sides.
One of the few sites that takes a detailed look at the book as well as the movie. Also has links to more sites about the actors.
This is a very interesting site, with two pictures of Bess Fortenberry, Fannie Flagg's aunt/inspiration for Idgie. It doesn't have TOO much info, but the stuff it does have is new to me and very interesting.

This is a relatively recent essay which compares and contrasts "Fried Green Tomatoes" with "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe", by Carson McCullers.

This isn't exactly an essay, it's more of a very detailed plot summary, but either way it is useful if you're just getting acquainted with Fried Green Tomatoes.

Well, my work here is done. You're on your own now, so click away!
