Basic Facts
Fried Green Tomatoes is a movie and a book. The book was
written in 1987, and the movie was made in 1991. It's the story
of a middle-aged woman named Evelyn(Kathy Bates in movie),
who's going through a lot of problems in her life. She is
overweight and depressed. She feels useless, and doesn't fit in
anywhere. She has begun to question her role as a housewife,
but, as the book says, no one cares what Evelyn thinks. She is
still trying to cope with her mother's death and her fear of her
own mortality. She has even contemplated suicide, but is too
afraid to do it.
One day, on a visit to a nursing home with her
husband, Ed, a well meaning but oblivious guy, she meets
Ninny(Jessica Tandy in movie), and Ninny tells her stories
about Whistle Stop Alabama, which is the town she grew
up and has lived in all her life. She tells Evelyn all about her
family and friends, and through Ninny's stories- particularly
the one's about Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth
(Mary Louise Parker) who co-ran the Whistle Stop Cafe-
Evelyn gains the strength, courage, and confidence to
regain control of her life and become a more assertive
and self respecting woman. Fried Green Tomatoes is
a story told with warmth, humor, and real affection for the characters.
A review called it "unabashedly sentimental" and I agree.
It's a nostalgic book, in that it takes place in the past and depicts it in a positive light. But it's not nostalgic too, because it firmly believes that people have the same potential to do good things now as they ever had. I like this book because it covers very serious issues with a sense of humor, and presents many strong opinions without being preachy.
