Navajo-Churro Ram from the 40's
We chose this ancient and rare breed of sheep because of their reputation for being tolerant of the extreme weather conditions that Texas is famous for. Navajo-Churro sheep are a very hardy sheep. They are resistant to many of the diseases that plague sheep. The ewes have little trouble lambing. And, they don't eat a lot. I like them because they are never boring, they come in a Rainbow of colors, and both Rams and Ewes can have no horns, two, four, and sometimes (but rarely) five or six horns! The fleece is unique in the fact it has a woolly undercoat, and the outer coat is longer and more coarse (more like hair). The Churro fleece is still one of the preferred wools for weaving by the Navajo.
After 10 years of tending this flock we reluctantly admitted that due to arthritis it was getting to be too much of a chore to shear and care for them properly. So, we decided to sell the flock. We found an excellent new home for them, but I sure can't tell you how hard it was to let them go!
Old habits die hard!
Guess I'll leave the pictures up for a while ...for old times sake.
