The Jacob Schaffhauser Family of Germany and Philadelphia
Jacob Schaffhauser, brewmaster, was born in Germany in 1846. He came to Philadelphia sometime before 1864, which was the year he served in the Union Army in the Civil War. He married Barbara Fritinger who was born in Germany in the 1840's.
Jacob and Barbara Schaffhauser owned and ran a brewery, several taverns, and a hotel in Philadelphia.
Their Children:
1. Charles Schaffhauser -- b. 1870, brewmaster, married Milcah Schaefer. Milcah was the widow of J. Henry Schaefer, Sr., who was one of the original founders of the Arnholt & Schaefer Brewing Co. in Philadelphia. Milcah's son, John Henry Schaefer, Jr., lived with and Charles and her. Her son served as Secretary and Treasurer of his father's company at that time. Charles was President of the Arnholt & Schaefer Brewing Co. from the 1910's until 1921. He was also a musician.
2. William Schaffhauser -- b. ? was a lithographer/engraver and his occupation was also listed as "liquors" in the Philadelphia directories at 501 N. 12th Street, which was one of the addresses of his father, Jacob's, businesses.
3. Otto Schaffhauser -- b. ?, brewmaster, married Augusta Schaefer. Augusta Schaefer was the daughter of Milcah Schaefer. Otto was the President of the Arnholt-Schaefer Brewing Corp. in Philadelphia during the 1930's and 1940's.
4. Amelia Schaffhauser (my G Grandmother) -- b. March 29, 1876, d. 1952. Married William Bower, b. 1875, d. 1938.
5. Jacob Schaffhauser, Jr. -- b. ?, d. 1904, at the age of 24. Jacob was a surveyor.
Probably other siblings.
After Prohibition, the family also owned the Vollmer Brewing Co. in Philadelphia.
