Who We Are
We are not a pet shop or a facility that you can drive up to and pick out a dog, we are aseries of foster homes throughout the Black Hills region and State of South Dakota. We are Boxer lovers that have come together to aid the breed we adore. We have opened our homes and our hearts to these neglected and forgotten souls and they have rewarded our lives in countless ways. The dogs come into our homes and live with our families. We work with them to train them, if they need any behavioral training, we teach them that humans love them and that we are not all bad. If you want to provide a loving home to a Boxer that will give you more than you could ever hope for in return, then you've come to the right place!! We are looking for families that teach with love and patience, not with yelling and hitting!!
What We Do
We spay and neuter all dogs that come into rescue!! It is our goal to help stop the overbreeding of boxers. There are THOUSANDS of homeless boxers all over our country. Rescues and shelters are overflowing and can't keep up with the numbers. Many of our rescue dogs come from a background of abuse and neglect. They may also come from a home that did not want to take the time to train the dog properly, so the dog will have developed bad habits, and the owners don't want to deal with the dog any longer. Many of the Boxers have serious health issues that would be a reason for euthanasia in a shelter, but rescue can take them in and spend the time to treat the illness and bring them back to good health. Recently, we've treated a boxer shot by a high powered rifle, another with severe Demodectic Mange, another with Congenital Orthopedic deformities, others with Cancer, crushed hips etc.
Where Do They Come From?
We predominately take in boxers from shelters that have tried to place them and they have run out of time OR they have health issues that the shelter can not deal with. We will also take in Boxers from shelters that are victims of abuse. Any reason that a shelter cannot put a boxer on the adopt floor, we will respond and take the dog into our program for assessment. We also take in Boxers from owners that through no fault of their own, can no longer keep their dog at that time in their life, but we are not a despository for those that don't want to invest time into their pets.
What You Need To Do!!
These dogs need responsible, loving owners that are willing to take the time to train them properly. Boxers have a very high energy level and are not the dog for everyone. Please RESEARCH the breed to see if this is the right dog for you. For instance, boxers are NOT outside dogs!!! You see how short their hair is, they can withstand the cold about as good as you or I can. Same with extreme heat. Boxers arevery strong and can be pretty rambunctious when they are young. We do not recommend a boxer for a home with young children unless you are an experienced boxer owner.
A Rescue Home is Filled With Love No Matter What!
Some of you may look at our rescues and think, well that one's tail is too long, or that one's muzzle isn't droopy enough etc, in our eyes, they are ALL beautiful and they all deserve the BEST home we can find for them!!! We make no guarantees on potty training or if something will get chewed up in your home. They are dogs and dogs do things like this. We are looking for homes that are opening their homes to a dog that didn't get such a great start in life and are willing to overlook a few mistakes along the way.
Why We Do What We Do!!
We in Boxer Rescue work very hard to bring these dogs back to a level of trust and health so that they can be adopted into a forever home. It is our goal and main focus to make sure that when we place a dog in a new home, it will be the LAST TIME this dog will ever have the upset of losing a home in his lifetime. To some, our standards and requirements may seem too restrictive, BUT our ONLY concern is what is best for the dog. We see these dogs when they entered our program physically abused, starved, so ill they could hardly stand. It can take weeks to gain the trust of a dog that has been severely beaten and to watch a dog like that blossom into a playful, trusting Boxer again makes us ALL realize the enormity of our responsibility to them. We are not a place that you can come and pick out a dog. WE PICK out the family that is right for our dogs through our adoption approval process. Of course you are choosing your dog that you are interested in, but we choose the applicant that we feel is best for that dog.
Our Beliefs!!
The number one killer of Boxers is Cancer. We believe we can combat it at least in one way, with good nutrition. We feed very high quality dog food, and we require our adoptive homes continue with a high quality food of their choice. The majority of dogs come in at a starvation level. We strongly believe that good nutrition is essential in bringing these dogs back to good health as well as preventing health problems down the road. Plenty of exercise and a good diet is essential to their well being.
