Virgo is home to this stellar gotham. The 4.4 magnitude star, 110 Virginis, shines just 38' due west. The sketch at left offers a 129X view in my 10-inch Meade Newtonian. 10.9 magnitude NGC 5838 is centered along with a nice stellar pairing. 8.1 magnitude HD 133601 is the brighter of the two. The galaxy hangs about 5' to the north. NGC 5838 ranges over a 4'x1'.5 area along a northwest-to-southeast axis. A stellar core region immediately stands out. This is embedded within a bright elongated inner section, which itself is embedded within the larger nebulosity. The galaxy fattens toward the middle and has a 13th magnitude star just off the southwest tip. Another 14 stars dot the field as framwork. |
