Draco is home to several bright galaxies. NGC 5879 is an 11.5 magnitude Sb-type spiral stationed 2.8 degrees southwest of 3.3 magnitude Edasich, Iota (12) Draconis. The drawing at left renders the view in my 10-inch Newtonian at 129X. NGC 5879 is composed with HD 134788 at the center of the field. The 7.4 magnitude star marks the galaxy's location some 7'.5 to the southeast. NGC 5879 is aligned roughly north-south across a 3'.0x1'.5 area. The stellar core region is neatly centered within the misty glow. The galaxy appears somewhat brighter along the long axis. A close pair of 11th magnitude GSC stars stands sentry 3'.7 to the east. Thirteen additional stars provide context. Don't forget to visit the fine edge-on spiral galaxy, NGC 5907, just one degree to the southeast.
