The sketch at left presents NGC 6642, an 8.9 magnitude globular star cluster in Sagittarius. This object is often overlooked in favor of nearby M22, a spectacular globular located about a degree to the east-southeast. NGC 6642 features a brighter core region, 3' in diameter, surrounded by a somewhat fainter outer nebulosity. The entire object occupies a 7' diameter area. The bright star near the northwest field boundary is 7.7 magnitude HD 170622. A closely grouped trio of 9th magnitude GSC stars mark the southern field boundary. Another 32 field stars complete the view. |
