The sketch at left presents Palomar 2 as it appears in the 18-inch at 199X. At 90,000 light-years from Earth, Palomar 2 appears small and hazy. This 13th magnitude globular covers a 2' diameter area with a pair of 13th magnitude stars along the eastern edge. It's a good visual challenge for a 12- to 14-inch telescope. The brightest members shine at almost 19th magnitude, which explains the fact that none are resolved in the Obsession. More typically, Pal 2 members dimly glow at 21st magnitude. Some 33 stars frame the view of this distant globular. You'll find Palomar 2 40 arcminutes west of 5.6 magnitude HD 30454 in far southwest Auriga.
