BIRD SONG: IDENTIFICATION MADE EASY

ABOUT MY BOOK:
"Bird Song" is 208 pages long and is divided into 4 main sections.

American Woodcock
Part I: The "System"
Part I is the Songs section.  In order to identify bird songs they have been organized
into 4 main categories.  Within each category there are further logical divisions which
aid in "keying in" on a particular song.  Detailed descriptions of song and habitat
should then allow for specific identification of the song.  Here are the categories and
divisions:

I Very Short Songs - Single-note song, Two-note song, Three-note Song

II Repeated Notes - Single note repeated (i trills, ii distinct notes), Two notes repeated,
                                     Three notes repeated

III Short Songs: Varying Notes - Several Varying Notes
                                                           - Containing a distinct repeated note or phrase

IV Long Songs: Varying Notes - Many Varying Notes
                                                           - Consisting of short, variable phrases

NOTE:  Ask yourself if a particular song fits into category I or II above.  If not, then it is
either a Short song with varying notes, or it is a Long song with varying notes

Marsh Wren
Part II: Habitat Guide
This section of the book uses the same system as Part I. However, this section limits
the choices not just by category, but also by habitat.  This makes it easier to key in
on a song that is associated with a specific habitat.  Part I has 11 chatters or trills, but
Marshes and Swamps in Part II has only 4.  Less choices, easier decision.
At the end of this section are one-liner overviews of all 125 bird songs organized
according to each of the six habitats.

Part III: Going For a Walk
This section leads the reader through each habitat, telling him/her where to look and
what to listen for in each particular case.

Part IV: Other Common Bird Songs
This section deals with 25 bird songs not included in the first section of the book.
