Part I: The "System"
Part I is the Songs section. In order to identify bird songs they have been organized
into 4 main categories. Within each category there are further logical divisions which
aid in "keying in" on a particular song. Detailed descriptions of song and habitat
should then allow for specific identification of the song. Here are the categories and
divisions:
I Very Short Songs - Single-note song, Two-note song, Three-note Song
II Repeated Notes - Single note repeated (i trills, ii distinct notes), Two notes repeated,
Three notes repeated
III Short Songs: Varying Notes - Several Varying Notes
- Containing a distinct repeated note or phrase
IV Long Songs: Varying Notes - Many Varying Notes
- Consisting of short, variable phrases
NOTE: Ask yourself if a particular song fits into category I or II above. If not, then it is
either a Short song with varying notes, or it is a Long song with varying notes
