He also spoke lovingly about his wife, stepdaughter Rachel, the baby on the way, and his parents and sisters. Troy, we know how hard it was for you to say goodbye to football. April 3, 2001 - Arlington, Texas. Troy, wearing a number 8 Texas Rangers baseball jersey and blue ball cap, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Rangers home opener against the Anaheim Angels. The pitch was a strike, right into the waiting glove of Rangers catcher Pudge Rodriguez. As Troy walked onto the field before the pitch, the crowd rose for an extended standing ovation - a fitting tribute to the Cowboys greatest all-time quarterback. During his pregame press conference, Troy revealed that he had not made a decision about his future career plans yet, but expected to within a few weeks. There are several articles on Troy's day at the ballpark, including his pregame press conference, at DallasCowboys.com. Also be sure to check out the photos on the Troy's Team web site. It was also Troy's first public appearance in Dallas since being released by the Cowboys. Troy was asked about his future involvement with the Dallas community. He said, "I keep pretty involved with my own foundation and that will continue, that's not going to stop. And I hope to still be active in the Dallas community in terms of charity and as long as some of these events will have me, I'd like to be a part of it." When pushed further to reveal his future career plans, Troy said he would go into it more prior to the Texas Rangers home opener, where he is scheduled to throw out the opening pitch. Check out the video from WFAA, Channel 8, Dallas: http://playlist.yahoo.com/makestream.asp?ID=1226446. March 9, 2001 - Phoenix, Arizona. Troy played in a celebrity basketball game today, benefitting the charitable organization of former Cowboys teammate Dale Hellestrae. When asked about the possibility of playing for another team, Troy said, "I'm married now and have an 11-year-old stepdaughter and my wife is pregnant with our first child. You know there's a lot more at stake, so it's just not a matter of picking up and going. If the right situation presented itself, then it would be something that I would consider. But I'm not going to go just anywhere just for the sake of playing. I guess the only thing we know for sure is that I won't be back in Dallas. You know my desire is to keep playing. I feel I still can do that." He smiled. "When Danny Marino retired and John Elway, you know I don't that they didn't retire saying that they could still do it." Speculation that Troy might join his good friend and former offensive coordinator Norv Turner in San Diego with the Chargers ended today when the Chargers signed quarterback Doug Flutie. Check out the video from WFAA, Channel 8, Dallas: http://playlist.yahoo.com/makestream.asp?ID=1184928. March 7, 2001 - The unthinkable, but the inevitable happened today. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, in what he said was the hardest decision of his tenure with the team, released Troy Aikman. Words alone cannot begin to express the appreciation that Troy's fans have for the 12 seasons he gave his all to the team. Thank you Troy - you are a hero in so many ways! Troy was caught somewhat unawares by the timing of the decision (speeded up by the League), and was still on vacation at his home in Santa Barbara, California, when Jones made the announcement. Troy spoke to the media by telephone, calling the decision "amicable and mutual," and keeping the door open that he could play elsewhere if possible. "I'd like to play somewhere. Whether that's something that can be worked out I don't know...there's nothing definitive...San Diego is certainly a possibility." "I don't know that I've had time really to check my pulse to be honest with you to know exactly what it is I'm feeling. There's a lot of sweat and tears that go into a career and to be able to do that for 12 years and then come to the realization that it's over with this particular club. I think I've always realized that it's a business. It's not the Cowboy organization or the helmet or the uniform, it's the people that you've been in contact with and the people that have made the helmet special and have made the uniform special and have made the Cowboys special all of these years."
