Troy Sightings - June-August 1999
Troy Sightings Archives
June-August 1999

August 27, 1999 - Texas Stadium, Irving, Texas. Chef Emeril Lagasse and Troy were at Texas Stadium where Lagasse prepared Troy's Chicken Breasts Alfredo from the 1998 Dallas Cowboys Family Cookbook for Good Morning America. Troy hung back and let Emeril do his magic. "I'm into eating much more than the cooking," he joked. "I ran out of recipes after the first year of the cookbook." He got in a little taste too: "It's a little heavy for a pregame meal, but it would probably taste pretty good after a victory."

About 100 kids from Happy Hill Farm Academy/Home in Granbury, Texas were on hand to watch, along with other early rising Cowboys fans. The cookbook is published annually and supports Happy Hill. It will ship on November 15, and is available for preorder: http://dallascowboys.catalog.com/viewProduct.cfm?item_id=44702. The taping began at 6:30 a.m., and aired on GMA later that morning. At the end of the segment, Troy presented the famous chef with a #8 Dallas Cowboys jersey. With a smile, Troy turned the jersey around to show the camera that the name on the jersey read "LAGASSE" rather than "AIKMAN."

July 26-August 25, 1999 - Wichita Falls, Texas. Dallas Cowboys Training Camp.

July 26, 1999 - Rookies and "selected veterans" were supposed to report to training camp today, and as it turns out, that meant quarterbacks and receivers as well. Coach Gailey had his troops out on the practice field by 3:30 this afternoon for a light workout. When the media questioned Troy about being at camp "early" he quipped that the skill positions were asked to report today, "and that having being said, Hellestrae is gonna wonder why he wasn't asked."

July 23, 1999 -Troy made another online appearance in Athlete Direct on America Online this evening, and spent a few minutes answering questions on his message board:

Question: "TROY THIS IS LEONS THIRD SUSPENSION FROM THE GAME . HOW DO YOU THINK THE D WILL PLAY WITHOUT HIM."

Troy: "I think the fact that we've known for some time now that Leon will miss games this year will help our defense make the adjustments necessary for us to remain strong defensively."

Question: "My Question is how hard is it when a teammate leaves and become a great player for another team. Is it all just a game on the field and off the field you can be friendly."

Troy: "It's always difficult to see friends leave and go on to play for other teams. We do, however, remain friends and keep in touch. It's always nice playing against some of the friends that you've made over the years. It makes for some great fun in the off-season with bragging right!...lol"

Question: "u guys r the best team ur the best quarterback u guys shouldnt lose a game"

Troy: "Although I am very appreciative of your enthusiasm and support, it's going to be tough for us to win ALL of our games. I'll take a few losses if it means another Lombardi Trophy...: )"

Question: "I was wondering how do you think the team is gonna be this year."

Troy: "I really believe that we will be improved from a year ago. What exactly that means, I'm not real sure. Obviously we have a tougher schedule this year due to us winning the NFC East, but even having said that, I really feel that we will improve on our 10-6 record. Our ultimate goal is to win another Super Bowl, but before you can accomplish that, a lot of things need to fall in place for a team. Our first concern will be trying to win our division."

July 21, 1999 - Troy made an online appearance in Athlete Direct on America Online this evening, and spent a few minutes answering questions on his message board, and then spent some time in the chat room. Here are the posts from his message board that he answered:

Question: "i have heard you say you don't have a college degree, but wish you had one. why don't you take corespondence courses through ucla?"

Troy: "It's a long story, but the correspondence avenue has been very well exhausted. I have no excuse for not having gotten my degree yet. I do, however, still plan on receiving my degree at some point and time."

Question: "How do you like the way Coach Gailey is doing during the off season?"

Troy: "Chan has been very active in his first full off-season with the team. We are all looking forward to improving on last year's 10-6 record. Like always, it should be an interesting year."

Question: "When does training camp begin for the cowboys? Do Bill Bates and Jay Novacek work with the cowboy org in any capacity? "

Troy: "Training camp begins for the rookies and select veterans on July 26th. The remainder of the team will report on July 29th. Bill Bates is currently helping with Joe Avezanno and special teams. Jay Novacek is not with the Cowboys but is having a successful post-football career with a hunting and fishing show on ESPN."

Question: "I work at a golf course and the Pro there is named Anthony (tony) he says he knows you from the yearly Member/guest games at Ancola golf resort in arizona. I was wondering if this was true."

Troy: "Yes it is very true. I have played in the Ancala Member/Guest tournament with Dale Hellestrae for the past couple of years. Tony is a wonderful person...I've enjoyed getting to know him at the tournament."

Question: "People think Randall CUnningham is great!! Since WHen?"

Troy: "Randall was a very good quarterback early in his career and then he suffered some major injuries. Things didn't work out like he had planned, but last year he had an opportunity and made the most of it."

July 13, 1999 - Reunion Arena, Dallas, Texas, Anthony Robbins Results 2000 Seminar. According to a report in the July 14 Fort Worth Star-Telegram, 14,000 people were on hand for the 10-hour seminar that featured Troy Aikman, General Norman Schwarzkopf, Larry King, Trisha Yearwood, and others. Troy emerged onto the stage through a burst of red, white, and blue confetti, and tossed some footballs out into the crowd. When Robbins asked him what his proudest accomplishments were, Troy said, "I'm sure everybody read about it. I got engaged last week, and I'm very excited and proud of that."

July 10, 1999 - The Dallas Morning News and other media outlets reported that Troy had become engaged over the 4th of July weekend to Rhonda Worthey, 30, a former Dallas Cowboys employee. Congratulations, Troy, and best wishes to Rhonda! May you be blessed with a lifetime of happiness together.

June 15-17, 1999 - Irving, Texas. Dallas Cowboys minicamp.

June 14, 1999 - The Troy's Team Fan Club is under new management. This coming August, Troy's Team will have a new catalog that will feature a new "Fan Club" kit and other Troy merchandise. The cost is still $35, and the proceeds benefit the Troy Aikman Foundation. Call (800) 876-9468 or write to: Troy's Team, Calvert Direct, PO Box 851, Colleyville, Texas 76034.

June 6, 1999 - BARCELONA, SPAIN: Troy joined former Buffalo Bills linebacker Ray Bentley and former Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Bill Maas in the broadcast booth for the 1999 debut of the NFL Europe League on FOX, as the Barcelona Dragons host the Scottish Claymores at 1:00 pm eastern time. Read more about this broadcast at http://www.nfleurope.com/news/week8/aikman.htm

June 5, 1999 - BERLIN, GERMANY. With one game already under his belt, Troy was more relaxed for his second outing as a color analyst alongside Brad Sham in the FOX broadcast booth. The Berlin Thunder was blown away by the Rhein Fire in a game that was broadcast in the States over DirecTV (although FOX Sports Net viewers got to see about fifteen minutes of the game when FOX lost the audio on the Galaxy game). If you have RealPlayer installed on your computer, you can listen to the archived broadcast at http://www.broadcast.com/makemedia/makeram.asp?id=94469.

Troy said that he had spent the past several days in Berin getting to know the players. He also mentioned that he had dropped by NFLEurope.com before leaving for Europe to check up on the League. In response to this confession, Brad accused Troy of being a geek, and Troy admitted to spending some time on the Internet but pointed out to Brad that he also did. To which Brad admitted to being a geek as well. Troy said he will be leaving for home on Monday, and is ready for some Texas culture. He has had a whirlwind tour of Europe - eight cities in 12 days, including two days in London for sightseeing. Brad commented that eight cities in 12 days qualified Troy as his own NBA franchise (LOL, Brad!!!)
