March 1999

March 31, 1999 - Athlete Direct, America Online. Troy stopped by his message boards and the chat room this evening. On his message board, Troy was asked, "As a collector myself, I was curious to know, do you really collect Hummels?" Troy answered, "Yes, I really do collect Hummels. I began my collection about two years ago. I've been aware of Hummels for quite some time, since my Uncle is also a collector." Another question on the board asked, "Just a question about your surgery. Have you experienced any problems since you had it done?" Troy replied, "I have not had any complications whatsoever following my surgery. I am very pleased with the results. In fact, several of my friends and family have since had the operation and they are also very pleased." Troy was also asked about appearances in the DC area: "I would like to know if you would ever be in the Washington, D.C. area at anytime (other than to play) the 'Redskins' for autograph sessions." Troy responded, "I tend to visit the D.C. area a couple of times a year during the off-season to visit my friend Norv Turner, but I am not scheduled to appear at any autograph signings in the D.C. area." Another poster wanted to know about Troy's Super Bowl rings: "Just wanted to know of your three super bowl rings is there one you wear more often and why." Troy replied, "I don't wear any of the Super Bowl rings very often, but on the few occassions that I do, I tend to wear the first ring the most...probably because of it being the first one, which was a very special year."

Here is an edited version of Troy's chat in the Athlete Direct chatroom:

March 31, 1999 - Irving, Texas. Troy had his right hand dipped in wax today, as part of the process to create a bronze of Troy's throwing hand gripping a football. There will only be 32 of the sculptures made, and they should sell for $12,000 each.

"I think this was the appealing thing for me, "Troy told Channel 4 in Dallas. "It's not an autographed jersey. It's not an autographed football, not that there's anything wrong with any of those things. But this was a unique piece and there's not many of them out there."

"There's 32 of them that will be made. I'll have some of those and then others will be sold. Whatever money I'm able to make from them will be provided to the Foundation."

Troy was also asked about Raghim "Rocket" Ismail, the prospective wide receiver for the Cowboys. "I like the name, the Rocket, for starters," he said chuckling. "He could help us, there's no doubt about that. I believe that if the team's going after him, there's a reason for that. That they feel he can come in here and help us and make us a better football team."

March 15, 1999 - Athlete Direct, America Online. Troy stopped by his message board this evening and answered six questions. I will update this page soon to let you know what he said!

March 8, 1999 - Athlete Direct, America Online. Troy stopped by his message board and came into the football chatroom this evening.

From the message board:

Troy was asked whether his eye surgery had improved his golf game. Troy responded, "The Lasiks surgery that I underwent a few weeks ago was very successful, but it has not changed my ability to see...it has only changed my ability to see WITHOUT contacts. I have always worn contacts and I could see 20/20 with those, bot I'm not seeing anything differently than before. I'm just doing it without corrective lenses."

He was asked what he does in the off-season to stay in shape. Troy said, "I workout pretty much year-round. Our off-season workout program began on March 1st, but I try to do some kind of cardiovascular exercise daily."

I posted a question to him about broadcasting NFL Europe games this spring. He replied, "I am going to be going to Europe this off-season to broadcast a couple of world league games. I will be doing color, alongside play-by-play announcer Brad Sham. I'm looking forward to the experience, although I'm not planning on this being an occupation following retirement."

Another post asked Troy how often he drinks MET-Rx, what his favorite flavor combination is, and then offered another recipe. Troy said, "I take the MET-Rx protein drink with HMB twice a day. I enjoy mixing it with apple juice and a dash of cinnamon. Of course, there are several different recipes that taste good. I'll have to try yours sometime...: )"

March 5, 1999 - An article in USA Today on sports figures having LASIK surgery to correct their vision mentioned that Troy was nearsighted before his surgery February 16th. His eye surgeon is quoted as saying that without contacts, Troy couldn't see the big E on the eye chart. With contacts, his vision was 20/20. Following surgery, his vision is now 20/15.

March 4, 1999 - Wyndham Anatole Hotel, Dallas, Texas. Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman were the co-chairmen of the Beyond the Rainbow Luncheon and Fashion Show, benefitting the Children's Cancer Fund. Troy, Roger, Daryl Johnston, Nate Newton, David LaFleur, Dexter Coakley, Chad Hennings, Jason Garrett, Charlie Waters, Charles Haley and other local celebrities participated as well. Troy and his teammates dressed in tuxedos and escorted young cancer patients who modeled outfits picked out especially for them.

In an interview, Troy talked about the kids involved in the show. "You get a chance to visit with some of these kids and you hear about some of the things that they've been through and what they've had to endure. It's a tough thing on all of them obviously, and on the families and people that are involved. The way that they're able to hold up to it is something we all look up to."

March 3, 1999 - KVIL's Brad Sham interviewed Troy onstage at the Dallas Zoological Society corporate CEO dinner.
