Life long friend, tenor great, the late Marchel Ivery.
A native of Ennis, Texas, though not from a musical family, Bruce
credits his school band director Willie C. Alton with encouraging his
desire to play the upright bass. With his ambition to also become a
band director, Bruce attended Navarro College as a music major for two
years, later earning an Associate Arts degree at Eastfield College.
He began his career as a bassist playing in clubs with fellow 2nd
Armored Division Military band members at Ft. Hood, Texas. After
returning to Dallas, he studied the Bass with Chuck Rainey (of Motown
fame). Thanks to encouragements from singer/songwriter Janette
Brantley and singer/friend Jeanie Maxwell, he began playing again
in clubs.
Bruce considers the time with Claude Johnson the most significant in
influencing his playing and learning to hear the music better. Claude's
exploritory approach to music, allows more choices with the harrmony
and melody line. This method gives room for creactivity.
He has to his credit a list of performances with Black Academy of Arts
and Letters,(Jumping at The Savoy, Lady Sings the Blues) and noted
performers the likes of Liz Mikel,Sandra Kaye,C.C.Rice,Martha Burks,
Margo Reymundo, Pat Peterson, Melba Joyce, Cynthia Scott, Benita
Arterberry, Carla Norris-Hopkins, Simone Jackson Rogers, Marilyn Walton,
Chris Calloway and the late Shirley McFatter (portraying the Legend Billie
Holiday at the Emerson Bar & Grill).
Besides playing with the Herbie Johnson Group, Bruce is occasionally
called upon to sub for other Bass Players in the Dallas Area.
