The Atachafalaya Experience
We accommodate the photographer, birders and lovers of nature who would appreciate seeing Louisiana's answer to the Grand Canyon, "The Atchafalaya". Louisiana's Atchafalaya is North America's largest river swamp and ranks among the top 10 wilderness areas in the United States. The vistas have the appearance of pristine cypress and mixed wood swamp.
On any given day one can expect to encounter beaver, nutria, otters, mink, deer, squirrels, and other mammals, as well as up to 38 species of birds, including some which are endangered. Alligators are also seen in season, but are not fed to hold them in a given area. Besides nature, we also observe the sport and commercial fishermen. Our boats are state-of-the-art aluminum, powered by Mercury outboard engines, and equipped with all safety features, cellular telephones and CB radios.
We are a father-son team and have many years of experience within the swamp, and are knowledgeable of the fauna and flora of the Louisiana ecosystems. Coerte A. Voorhies, Jr. is a consulting geologist (semi-retired) and has knowledge of the geology, history, geography and various ethnic cultures of South Louisiana. Kim B. Voorhies is retired military and has hunted and fished, as well as accompanied his father throughout the marshes and swamps of South Louisiana, assimilating the experience necessary to conduct trips into this wilderness.
Our expedition has been featured on the Discovery Channel, BBC, French TV 1, Channel 3-Lille and Paris, France, Polish TV, Italian TV, A&E Channel, Australian TV as well as many newspaper and travel magazines. Our trips are designed to expose our guests to the wild portion of the Atchafalaya and, depending on the season and water levels, there are six separate areas which can be explored. We accommodate up to 18 people in three boats, therefore, are able to give individual attention. Two trips are taken daily-Seven days a week weather permitting. Times are set by prior arrangement.
