For the Love of Drums

Daniel E.
St. Paul, MN, USA
I am a percussionist. I play the djembe and other hand drums and percussion instruments. I also like to woodburn (use an electric woodburning pen to draw/burn artwork) on basswood boxes and other unfinished wood. I have a real job that pays the bills and allows me to buy my drums but this page isn't about my job, it's about drums. So, why do I have so many drums? Plain and simple- I love them. Each one is unique. Each has it's own sound, it's own feel. To feel a rhythm, to play a rhythm, brings me great joy...hopefully I can spread some of that joy to others.

The top picture shows a lot, but not all, of my drums and percussion instruments. Most of them are playable but a couple are tourist type drums and one is an antique. The bottom picture is like how I have it set up now with the percussion table to the left of me and the drums wrapping around to the right. But now I have the djembe in between the congas and large standing drum and I keep another djembe on the floor behind me for when I need to switch sounds. I also now have carpeting under the set to help with the noise because whenever I hit a bass note, the whole house vibrated! I now have two new large 14inch and 16inch x 45inch tall custom made, custom carved ashiko style standing drums from SenegalStyle Djembe & Djun Djuns(Thank you Sineta - you, Oumar and your crew are the best!!!) See picture to right of unfinished drums (pic borrowed from SenegalStyle)
Take away my drums, take away my life.

"The spirit of the drum is something that you feel but cannot put your hands on. It does something to you from the inside out...it hits people in so many different ways. But the feeling is one that is satisfying and joyful. It is a feeling that makes you say to yourself, 'I'm glad to be alive today! I'm glad to be part of this world!'" Babatunde Olatunji
I cannot have a page without mention of the late great Babatunde Olatunji. He was and still is my biggest inspiration. Even though I never got the chance to meet him, I miss him dearly. My words cannot properly give tribute to this man so instead I ask that you just look at this picture and take a moment of reflection to remember him and where he was going, and to yourself and where you are going.
If you do not know who Babatunde is I suggest you buy a couple of his cd's and start to find out. Do a search online and you will find many sources for information on Baba.
