Notes for JEANNE HENRIETTE BONZON:
From Allen Schweinsberg, 2001:
Both "Jane" and Joseph Zahler died in Beaver Falls, Beaver County, Pa., according to the Bonzo Folder in the Beaver Falls Carnegie Library. Marriage record from St. Pauls German Lutheran and Reformed Church in Zelienople, Pa. gives her name as "Jannetta". AKA "Charlotte", "Jane" and "Jeannette"

Notes for ABEL FOMBELLE:
or "Fombell"
Almost certainly not married to Jeanette Bonzon, Abel was still living when Jeanette married Joseph Zahler.

Notes for JOSEPH ZAHLER:
From Allen Schweinsberg:
" the sister of Joseph Zahler is the first wife of Peter Lewis Bonzo, Margaret Zahler."

From David White:
Extensive Zahler history available at http://www.scioto.org"

More About JOSEPH ZAHLER:
Fact 1: Married at St Paul's German Lutheran and Reformed Church, Zelienople, Pa. documentation: from St. Paul's German Lutheran and Reformed Church records (Zelienople, PA). Confirmation on 14 June 1828 (1829?) gives birth as 1 Aug 1809. Church records lists another child "Johanna Zahler, b. November 22, 1823" but this is a very early date to be Joseph's child.
"1860 Census for McDonald Twsp. [Hardin Co., Ohio] I have a Jacob Zahllar 48 Farmer born Pa with wife, Mary, 47, ... . The same census year, the family just before this Joseph Zahller & Harriett is the Daniel Stout 48, born PA, family ... . Living with them is Joseph Zahllar age 51 "Mast. Carpenter, value 1000. & $695, born PA, who is the Joseph Zahllar married to Jeanette Henriette Bonzo, I believe." -- Lynda Speidel
Joseph appears on the 1880 census in Pulaski (Co.?) Missouri.
CENSUS: 1850, 1860, 1880

iv. SOPHIA BONZON[83,84], b. Abt. 1805; d. 1879[85,86,87]; m. JOSEPH POWELL[88,89]; b. January 18, 1794, , Washington county, Pennsylvania[90]; d. 1870, Lancaster township, Butler county, Pennsylvania[90].

Notes for SOPHIA BONZON:
birth year estimated from census. Erika White has 1803 Zelienople, PA. Death date from Dolly Whelan who probably got it from the "History of Butler County, Pa.".
CENSUS: 1850, 1860, 1870

Notes for JOSEPH POWELL:
From "History of Butler County, Pa." -- "Joseph Powell, Sr. {sic}, was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, in 1793, learned the blacksmith's trade in his native, and before reaching his majority removed with his parents to Beaver county. He there married Sophia Bonzo {sic}, of that county, and continued working at his trade for some five years after his marriage. He then purchased a farm of seventy-five acres in Beaver county, where he resided for a period of thirty years. At the end of this time he bought a farm in Lancaster township, Butler county, now the home of his son Joseph, settled upon it and lived there until his death, in 1870. His wife died in 1879. They were the parents of the following children: Peter; Joseph; Margaret, deceased wife of George Teets; Charley, who died in the army; Mary; Jane; John; Edward; Lizzie; and Bell, deceased. Mr. Powell and wife were members of the Baptist church and in politics, he was an adherent of the Republican Party.
birth year estimated from census. Information in the Bonzo folder in Beaver Falls' Carnegie Library gives dates of 4 Oct 1812 - 12 Feb 1867 for Joseph Powell with burial in "Kronk" or "Krank" Cemetary. (birthdate seems very suspicious). Another has him born in 1784. Sue Rogge on RootsWeb World Connect gives birth date as 18 Jan 1794 and this seems quite likely.
Dolly Whelan gives death date as 20 March 1876 in New Sewickley Twp., Beaver County, but burial for Joseph & Sophia in Kronk Cemetery in Madison, Scioto County, Ohio!? The "History of Butler County, Pa."

v. PETER LEWIS BONZO[91], b. 1806, Brush Creek area, Beaver County, Pa.[92]; d. December 15, 1891, North Sewickly Township, Beaver County, Pa.; m. (1) MARGARETTA B. ZAHLER[92,93,94]; b. July 12, 1807, , , Pennsylvania[95]; d. Abt. 1838, New Sewickley township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania[96]; m. REBECCA BROOKS[99], 1839; b. 1820; d. 1887.

Notes for PETER LEWIS BONZO:
From Mary May: "In a letter to her daughter, Blanche Miller Bonzo says that Peter met one of his wives, she believes the first, at an Inn in Sewickley, where she worked. Peter was riding a black stallion to Pittsburgh and was having trouble mounting him. all present were afraid to help, so the girl came out and held the horse. They were later married in Pittsburgh."
Birth year estimated from various census information plus known birth years of siblings. Death date from affidavit of Henry Bonzo to Register of Wills made on 16 March 1889. See LDS microfilm 1288904, Vol 5, p 332.
CENSUS: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880

Notes for MARGARETTA ZAHLER:
From Allen Schweinsberg:
"Margaret's brother Joseph was the husband of Jeanne Henriette Bonzon, the sister of Margaret's husband.
The first name is contained in several deeds. Last name was "Fombelle" according to Rex Bonzo, but this is now known to be an error. "Zeiler" (Zahler, Sailor) is claimed by others. Evidence for the latter name consists of 1) Christian "Sailor" lived nearby and Margaret's grandson was named Christian Saylor Schweinsberg; 2) Joseph "Zahler" married Peter Lewis Bonzo's sister. 3) Death certificate of daughter Margaret Brown indicates her mother was Margaret "Zeiler." That of daughter Mary Schweinsberg gives Margaret "Sailor" and says she was born in Pennsylvania.
Confirmation and birth dates given in St. Paul's German Lutheran and Reformed Church records (Zelienople, PA), which gives confirmation on 8 Nov 1823, birth date, and parents.

Notes for REBECCA BROOKS:
documentation: birth and death years supplied by Mary May
CENSUS: 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880

vi. CHARLES J. BONZO[100,101,102,103,104], b. 1807, , Butler County, Pa.; d. November 12, 1890, Brush Creek area, Beaver County, Pa.; m. CATHARINE GOEHRING[105,106,107], June 14, 1837; b. December 25, 1820, , Butler County, Pa.; d. September 24, 1899, Brush Creek area, Beaver County, Pa..

Notes for CHARLES J. BONZO:
CENSUS: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880
1860 US Census---Charles and Catharine's real estate was valued at $12,600 and their personal property was valued at $2,050.
'History of Beaver County' (Warner, 1888, pg.16)---"...he settled in New Sewickley Township, becoming a prosperous farmer and extensive land owner, his farm consisting of between 1,000 and 1,200 acres...."
D.L.White---"Charles' marker reads: 'Charles Bonzo died November 12, 1890 in his 84th year, Gone to rest.' Catharine's marker reads: 'Catharine 1820 - 1899 At rest'. The markers of Catharine's parents and several other Goehring family members are just a few feet away."
'History of Beaver County' (Warner, 1888, pg. 750)---"...he is a Republican."
From the 'Beaver county Argus' of April, 1879 (courtesy of Allen Schweinsberg, 2001):
"Quite a Curiosity---In the summer of 1818, 4 youths named Bonzo, residing in New Sewickley township, this county, while at work in a field one day, came across a common turtle, or mud turtle, and forthwith proceeded, after the usual custom to inscribe their respective names upon its horny shell, after which they set it at liberty again. The circumstance, during the lapse of the sixty years since past, had, we have no doubt, been almost if not quite forgotten until one day last week, when the identical {sic} turtle, bearing upon its back the names of JOHN, LOUIS, HENRY AND CHARLES BONZO, was discovered upon the farm of the latter named gentleman in the above township, about half a mile from the scene of its first discovery in 1818. The gentlemen whose names it has been so continually bearing aloft for more than half a century past, with the exception of the first named , whose death occurred not long since, are still living, at advanced ages, in the township above referred to, and, after the natural curiosity was duly inspected by themselves as well as by different members of the Bonzo families and others, it was again set at liberty near the place of its last discovery, from where, should it continue to travel at the traditional rate of speed, it may be discovered in the next century a mile or so distant, assiduously perpetuating the name of BONZO."

Allen S. comments: " 'HENRY' is surely an error. the fourth child must have been the very young GEORGE."

Burial: Zelienople, Jackson township, Butler County, Pennsylvania

vii. SUSANNA ELIZABETH BONZO[108,109,110], b. April 05, 1810, Brush Creek area, Beaver County, Pa.[111,112]; d. January 24, 1898, Madison township, Scioto County, Ohio[113]; m. Buried at: Squires cemetery, Minford, Scioto county, Ohio

Notes for JACOB DIEMER:
From Scioto County Descendancies: Hans Diemer, Fifth Generation, Jacob Diemer, www.scioto.org,:
"Jacob must have traveled with his brother-in-law John {Jean Gabriel} to Ohio in 1849 where he entered two land Patents: #15929 & #16260. The land of 157.49 acres was located in section 7, Madison township, Scioto county. Jacob returned to Beaver county, Pa. and the family remained there several more years My Dad, Joseph H. Deemer, placed the time of the move to Ohio at about 1856.

Jacob and Susan loaded their family and belongings on a river barge and floated down the Ohio river to Portsmouth. They traveled up the Scioto Valley to Madison Township. There were other relatives in the area, half of Susan's siblings had moved to Scioto county. Their new home was on virgin land which had to be cleared and a cabin built. Unfortunately, Jacob caught the "Ague" and died in October 1857 leaving Susan with the farm and a family of ten children to raise alone. She was amazing!"

July 15, 1822, ?, ?, ?, Germany[136,137]; d. September 14, 1889, Brush Creek area near Unionville, New Sewickly Tnsp, Beaver county, Pa., USA[137].

Notes for GEORGE R. BONZO:
CENSUS: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880

R.E.Bischak---"George was born at Brush Creek and married Magaret Rauscher (sic) who was born in Germany. He died in New Sewickley Township. It is interesting to note that during this generation on Bonzons, the "N" was dropped from the family name leaving the family from that point on to be known as "BONZO". No one knows for certain why the "N" was dropped. One possible reason is that when Bonzon is spoken with a french accent, the "N" at the end is silent. People who heard the name, possibly pronounced by Pierre or his sons were not hearing the "N" because of the accent. Eventually the "N" was lost forever in the United States. Relatives living in Pompaples, Switzerland today still go by "Bonzon."
"Charles and George remained in New Sewickley Township and became very successful farmers. Their brother, Peter Lewis, became a successful farmer and horse breeder in North Sewickley Township. There was much visiting between families, some even stayed years with each other."
CENSUS: 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880

'History of Beaver County', (Warner, 1888, pg.750---"George Bonzo was a farmer of New Sewickley Township, where he was born Jan. 15, 1815...a son of Lewis (sic) and Margaret (sic) Bonzo, who were natives of France, and came to America after their marriage and settled in Bulter County whence they they removed to Beaver County...George Bonzo was married Jan. 14, 1840 to Margaret Rauscher, who was born in Germany July 15, 1822, and came to America in 1835 with her parents George and Margaret Rauscher, who settled in Beaver County, and from there moved to Tennessee, where they died...Mr. Bonzo was a farmer all his life and at one time owned 300 acres...was a member of the Lutheran Church...was a Republican."

D.L.White---"George and Margaret are buried at Zelienople (English Lutheran) cemetery in Zelienople, Butler County, Pa. Their stone (more like a monument) states, 'George Bonzo died May 06, 1886 71 yrs. 03 m. 21 d. (there is also an inscription that will need rubbing to be deciphered).' Margaret's side reads 'Margaret wife of George Bonzo died Sept. 14, 1889 aged 67 yrs. 2 m. Them also who sleep in Jesus will God bring with Him.'"
There are today in the Brush Creek area, some Bunzo's. According to family lore, the third or fourth generation picked up the local accent, and, due to a strict schoolmarm, Bunzo was born. All of the Bonzo's in the "Brush Crick" area today will occasionally slip and pronounce the name Bunzo."
Mary May---"He spelled his name 'Bunzo' until the 1860's."
