HISTORY

The Ballet Folklorico Boriken was formed in September 1992 by Olga E. Custodio, Director, with a small group interested in promoting and preserving the Puerto Rican heritage through typical folk dances and music.  The group performed without a formal name during the first years.  In March 1994 they adopted the name, Grupo de Baile Boriken.  In January 1995, the group was formalized and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the State of Texas under its current name.

Ballet Folklorico Boriken is very dedicated to representing the Puerto Rican folk dances and music with authenticity and professionalism.  Boriken has many monitery contributors and support from several folk dance groups from Puerto Rico like Gibaro de Puerto Rico and Guateque.  The most important support we receive is from our families and friends that contribute day to day.  The Puerto Rican Institute of Culture has also provided materials to ensure authenticity.

The majority of the members of the Ballet Folklorico Boriken are of Puerto Rican heritage living in San Antonio.  Performances are with live music and/or taped music, depending on the event.  Boriken practices at the International Folk culture Center of Our lady of the Lake University.  Workshops are offered for the community at large to learn and experience the rich Puerto Rican dance and musical culture.

Boriken annually represents Puerto Rico in the Texas Folklife Festival held every June in San Antonio, Texas.  The group has also participated in many cultural events hosted by different groups and organizations established in San Antonio like the Puerto Rican Heritage Society, San Antonio Museum of Art, Club Damas de Puerto Rico, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, University of Texas in San Antonio,  City Dance and San Antonio Parks and Recreation.  Boriken has also performed in Killeen, Austin and San Marcos Texas.
