Historic Christianity

For the first 1,000 years of Christian history, there was only one Church. It was united in faith, and existed as a body made up of many local communities. There were some variations in ritual, and local custom flavored both the worship and the lives of the people, but this was not allowed to alter the beliefs. In the eleventh century there was a major split, which resulted in the churches of the west, organized under Rome, separating themselves from the churches of the east. The churches of the east, now known as the (Eastern) Orthodox Church, have remained faithful to the beliefs and practices of the early Christians to this day.
