the story of my life:
Hi, I am Brenda Carol Beene Edwards Roberts. I was born Feb. 14th
(never mind what year) in Greenville, Texas. My parents were Elery
Otho (Otto) Beene and Ruby Dell Horton Beene. I have two sisters-Janice and Barbara; one brother living, Billy, one half-sister- Ellen; and one brother, David Wayne, that died at birth from doctor's drunken carelessness, and one half-brother, Raymond Marion Elery Taylor, that died at the age seven days from multiple birth defects.
(The half brother and sister were children of my father's and his
girlfriend's.)
My parents moved to Sherman when I was three years old. I had been stuck there almost my entire life so far. I hate Sherman! Though it isn't Sherman's fault, I have been raped there twice, broken in on and robbed.
I have been in two abusive relationships. One was an actual marriage,
and though I divorced him, I can't get rid of him totally....his mother
was married to my dad's brother which makes him STILL my step-cousin. 2002 My first husband referred to here, died unexpectedly this year from a heart attack brought on by a severe seizure. I went to his funeral and finally said goodbye.
I have made short escapes from time to time...
and lived in Mountain Home, Ark for three months in 1983, visited the Quad Cities, Ill and Iowa in 1983, visited Biloxi, Mississippi for a couple of weeks back in 1985. I lived in Mt. Vernon, Missouri for a couple of months in 1986; and in Greenville, TX. for almost a year in 1984; and then I finished nursing school, fell out of love with my then boyfriend and heart over heels in love with Clifford Thomas Roberts.
I am or was a Licensed Vocational Nurse. I graduated in 1984 and went to
work in Citizens General Hospital in Greenville, TX. I came back here
10 months later to have surgery, and went to work at Wilson N. Jones
Hospital and at several of the area nursing homes.
April Fool's Day 1989 -- My best friend Cliff asked me to marry him.
That was the second happiest day of my life. The happiest day was
JULY 4, 1989.
The day started out a disaster! It was hot -- 104 degrees or more! My
sister Jan made the wedding cakes for us. It was a special design. The
three tiered wedding cake was connected by a ladder to a sheet cake straight
out of fantasy land. Jan and I took the cake in her car to the church to set
it up for the reception. Her youngest daughter, Julie, went with us. We had
one key to the church, and neither of us had pockets on our shorts. We lay
the keys on the table with the first two tiers of cake and went back out
after the third and the sheet cake. Julie was holding the door. I told her
"Don't let go of the door, or it will lock us out." Why did I waste my
breath talking to an 8 year old? She let the door slam behind us. And
there we stood, two blocks from a phone. Jan's car keys were lying on
the table inside with the key to the church... and we were melting with
the other two layers outside.
I could have gleefully killed my niece that day. It was my wedding day
and the guest were due to arrive any minute, and I was stuck --covered in
sweat, wearing a pair of torn shorts, and a string tied sun top with NO bra
-- needless to say I was not happy. I had to walk 2 blocks in the heat,
with a bad back, hurting like Hades, to a pay phone to call the Bishop's
house hoping he was still there and had a key with him to let us back in.
Julie begged to go with me. I was so mad at her I didn't even answer...just
began walking up the hill to the store. After I returned --yes the Bishop
was home and would come rescue us -- I sat in Jan's car, in pain and tears,
as guests began to come in the parking lot. Luckily, one of the first to
arrive was Cliff's best man Wesley and his wife Elizabeth and they took me back to
Janice's house to get my own car, and my wedding dress. I was late to my
own wedding.
Lets skip a few years here...
Cliff and I lived, and played in Dallas for 3 years. Cliff was manager
of Titan Comics, where we became fast friends with owner Cecilia Shorr.
Though we are now back in Sherman, we still are in touch with Cecilia and
her family. Her husband Jeremy now runs the comic book store, and Cecilia
is very busily raising their beautiful son Benjamin and three daughters, Sarah,
Charlotte, and the newest baby, Freda Clementine, born this year
(1998).
In our own family, My neices are trying to repopulate our family by
themselves. Julie, who locked me out on my wedding day, is now 15 and
pregnant. Darla, my eldest neice, has three children. Her baby Anita Diana
Rochelle Horn was born in November 1998. My neices, April and Amanda just
got married. April married Tommy on July 31st and Amanda married Howie on
her mom's birthday, Aug. 29th. (They are already separated --it is a long
story but Howard had a prior commitment he didn't bother to mention --a
common law wife that objected to him marrying Amanda.)Amanda is also now
pregnant and due in May of 1999.
(update March 2000)
I now have 6 nieces, 3 nephews, 3 grand-nephews, and two grand nieces with one more on the way. My niece Julie is expecting her second child, and my half sister Ellen is expecting her first child.
in the years I have chosen to skip for now.... My mother died Aug. 22, 1995; another friend Steven Upson was murdered Sept. 17, 1995;and our best friend Jerry Anderson died of AIDS in our home on
October 15, 1995 -- National Poetry Day.
1998 The new adventures of my life have really picked up this season.
In October, our friend Coke decided to move in with us. He moved in the
last of his stuff on Thanksgiving weekend. Coke is my husband's boyfriend and we all love each other very much. This is Coke and Cliff...
(Cliff is my husband and Coke is the one on the left).
I swiped this picture off of our friend Kaye's website.
and here is a holiday greeting from all of us to you---

Cliff's mother died December 19th 1999 of heart problems leaving us
responsible for taking care of her mother. In January Grandmother Lida
Lee was hospitalized with double pneumonia, a UTI, and getting toxic from bacteria in her blood stream. We found out she has been having a large number of TIA's (little strokes) and she has now lost the ability to communicate. Her husband Roscoe Lee died while she was in the hospital. Cliff's mom's only living brother Gordon is dying of the same kind of cancer that killed their brother three years ago.Gordon and Grandmother Lee died. Gordon four months (in 2000) after Cliff's mom and Grandmother Lee two years later(2001).
I am going to do it! I am going to write my autobiography. For
years people have been telling me that my life story would make a hell
of a good soap opera or movie of the week. I have begun the story. We'll see how many years it takes to finish it (Grin).
(update 3/7/2000) Coke's mother died of Cancer (really septic shock from an infection in the cancerous mole on her back) and he inheirited her home in Fort Worth, Tx. We have sold our home and are going to move to Ft. Worth with our darling Coke. I am finishing up all the school I can take at Grayson County College towards my BA in English with a teaching certificate and my goal of being a Certified Poetry Therapist. I hopefully will be going to school at the University of Texas at Arlington this fall.
(update 4/6/2000) I am featured poet for the month of April 2000. April is National Poetry Month. You can see the emagazine at
"sometimes I sleep with the moon". It is a busy month for me. I have been featured in Sol Magazine (Houson/Galveston area based email magazine)and Map of Austin (Austin based email magazine). And on Tuesday May 11,2000, Cliff and I are being honored along with others in Grayson County College's Evening of Excellence program.
My nephew William, my brother Billy's son, is old enough to be working part time. He is working at a batting practice field. Billy is coaching a soft ball or baseball team for the youth leagues. Both Billy and Cindy's children William and Christina are athletic and are on the ball teams.
My nephew Jim is contemptating selling his house on the other end of the block and buying a different house -- the one Billy lived in/owns on Fern Street. Janice, Jim's mother, hasa new 5 bedroom double wide on land that she almost totally owns. Soon, Janice will be grandmother to six. Darla is pregnant with her fourth child (due in November 2000) and Julie is pregnant with her second.
My sister Barbara is getting her third or fourth divorce. She is grandmotherto two terrific boys. April and Tommy are doing great. Amanda has an apartment of her own (though she never stays there) and a job and just got her driver's license. April got her license too. Amy ran away from home and stayed gone for about a week or two. She didn't even come home for her sixteenth birthday. see page 2 for updates!
October 1, 2002 Coke, Cliff and I just bought a home in the Samson Park area of Fort Worth off of a street named Beverly Hills.
I have 3 books published -- 2 on CD rom (read only) and other ebook formats and one in print as well as electronic format. There is lots to say about the adventures of being me but I will save that for another page.
