President of the Southern Iowa Mustang Club
Southern Iowa Mustang Club
Bill's 1968 pages:
This is his future 1968 Trans-Am replica.  Shelby used coupes in Trans-Am racing.  The 1968 cars used the "Tunnel Port" 302 with Boss 302 sized ports.  Unfortunately it did not have a beefed up bottom end and suffered a number of failures during the season.  Ford fixed those problems with the Boss 302 in 1969.
1968 Mustang 200 cid 3 speed car.  Origionally yellow with black interior.  Was a California car driven to Iowa and sold here.  Replacing six with a 351 4-barrel engine and auto trans.  Trans-Am replica car will be yellow with black hood like Shelby built them.
The six came out and we began working on the 351.  A 1976 Granada provided the 351 and auto trans and front suspension.  The Mustang will be outfitted with disc brakes and has the top A-frame points moved for road racing
This is the '68 being primered.  John Plants, a member of the club helped out with his paint gun and compressor.  It will be light yellow when painted with a black hood.
The 351 had to be bored out because of a couple of bad cylinders.  Arnold Motor Supply in Oskaloosa, Iowa prepared the engine for installation
This is the engine nearly completed.  The 351 Windsor from the Grenada was rebuilt and fitted with a high performance cam and a marine cast-iron four barrel manifold.  Arnolds had to bore it .040 because of damage to the cylinder walls.  It received a new oil pump and water pump.  A Holley carb will sit on top of the intake.
This is a picture of the C4 trans after I installed a B&M shift improver kit.  Since it is a 1977 C4 it has the dipstick tube in the pan instead of the case.  We borrowed a pan from an earlier C4 to install it in the car.  We got a B&M torque converter to use in the project and it was a 26 spline but our flywheel has a 11.4 bolt pattern instead of a 10.5 pattern so we can't use it.  That kept us from installing the engine and tranny over the Thanksgiving day weekend.  I can't use the torque converter in my '66 because it has a 24 spline so we are out of luck all the way around.  Hopefully we can trade it in.
Prepping the 351 Windsor and C-4 auto trans for installation.  We painted it the later ford blue because we liked it better.  Notice the aluminum bellhousing that I spent too much time polishing.  We had a bunch of time because we had trouble getting the proper torque converter for a 351 which is different than a 302.
And we have touchdown!  The installation went smoothly.  The four barrel engine will soon be running.
Here is Bill along with the painter John a clubmember who loaned his expertise in the constricted paint room.  We put plastic up and under and didn't get much dirt in the paint.
This is a picture of all the parts on tables being painted.  The Meadowlark yellow paint with black hood came out pretty good considering the environment.
Here it is drying.  They painted this on a Friday while I was at work.  Jared and his brother helped out a bunch.  Later we will apply a tape stripe on the sides.
Here Bill is beginning the process of sanding and buffing, sanding and buffing.  The drivetrain was put on hold until this process was completed.  Unfortunately we did not complete it enough before the Tulip Time show.
