1973 Front end noise
We ran into a problem with the 1973 Grande where we had a severe noise on bumps somewhere in the front end. We replaced everything that moved on the front end as a start. Nothing helped and in fact the noise got worse. Finally we found the answer from someone else who had the same problem. The power front disc brakes have a small anti-noise plate in there. The plate was not replaced by a mechanic when doing routine maintanance. We had to purchase new plates and install them and the noise that ended up costing a bunch of money went away.

1964 1/2 - 1966 Power steering
The power steering on my 64 1/2 had a hose leak and the pump siezed up. I cut the belt and continued driving it. 10 years later when we went to restore the Mustang we found that the power steering control was not available at all. We purchased a rebuild kit but they do not contain all the parts you may need to get. We did not try the option of sending it in with cash to hope they can rebuild it. We ended up having to have the piston inside the unit machined from scratch because the threads had rusted so bad. The inside of the control valve was heavily pitted. So far it works

1964 1/2 - 1966 Fenders
If you are going to rebuild your early Mustang repro fenders can be a cheap way to go but remember that they are not origional and must have a 10% difference from stock to be legal. You may end up with more than the difference in cash in headaches and poor fit. There are some who even "fix" repro fenders by cutting and welding them to make them fit right. Reproduction fenders are generally not as tough as origional either. They pick up dents and twists easily and by the time they reach you they may be below your tolerance. If you are going to put several thousand dollars worth of paint on your car think seriously about the fenders you put on it.

1964+ Body work
When you are prepping the body for paint think about it before you take that sander and grind deep into putty on the body. Many Mustangs have been repaired in the regular way with bondo and then painted over. That is normal practice in body shops for limited damage. A car can look good on the outside but could be a mess across the metal. A '68 we were working on looked fine but we ground off putty in places and found deep creases. It took too much time fixing them again than it was worth and we couldn't do the job correctly

Wiring for Mustangs
It is a good idea to replace wiring when restoring a Mustang. The tailight and gas tank wiring is a snap to replace if you have the car apart and the front engine wiring is also an easy change. 20+ year old wiring cracks and comes apart and should be replaced. The under dash wiring is something we haven't tackled as yet but if mice have been in the car it should be done also.
