The Deity of Christ
by John A. Kohler, III
At Morris Fork Baptist Church, we believe that the Lord
Jesus Christ, as the second Person of the Triune Godhead, is God, always
has been God, and always will be God. The Bible explicitly states that
Jesus is God (Isa. 9:6; Mat. 1:23; Jn. 1:1; 20:28; Acts 20:28; Rom. 9:5;
Phil. 2:6; I Tim. 3:16; Tit. 2:13; Heb. 1:8; I Jn. 5:20). In our opinion,
it is no mere coincidence that most modern translations of the Holy Scriptures
(e.g., the RSV, NASV, and NIV) change or cast unnecessary doubt upon many
of these key Bible verses.
Religious liberals do not believe in the eternal deity
or everlasting Godhood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Instead, they regard Him
simply as a devoutly religious man through whom God worked in a unique
way, as a great teacher or prophet, as a totally-committed martyr, or as
a model man who was ahead of the rest of the human race in His evolutionary
development. While these liberals are willing to “tip their hats” to Jesus,
they are not at all willing to fall on their faces before Him and worship
Him as Almighty God.
Ernest Pickering issues a timely warning to Christians
living during this Laodicean age of apostasy when he writes: “Until fairly
recent times almost all orthodox Christians have held to the doctrine of
Christ’s deity. Unfortunately, the church has fallen upon evil days and
now many pulpits are occupied by men who deny this major and basic Biblical
truth. Leading religious figures no longer take seriously the Biblical
evidence for Christ’s deity. Some unbelieving preachers and professors,
however, do not always express themselves as plainly as others. They prefer
double talk. Sometimes modern liberal preachers declare that they believe
Jesus Christ is God; but if you understood their language, you would realize
they do not mean what the Bible means. Christian people need to develop
sharp spiritual discernment so they will not be taken in by everyone who
claims to believe in the deity of Jesus Christ.”
Religious liberals believe in a Jesus other than the Jesus
revealed in Holy Writ (Jn. 8:23-24; II Cor. 11:3-4; Gal. 1:6-9; I Jn. 4:1-3;
II Jn. 7-11). The Jesus they believe in has never existed in human history,
but is a figment of their wicked imaginations and an invention of their
depraved minds and hearts. Religious liberals cannot be considered Christians
in the Biblical sense of the word. True Christians believe in the Jesus
of the Bible!
| “In the past 200 years liberal theology has vigorously
expressed a denial of Christ’s deity. Yet C. S. Lewis was correct when
he said that the only options available concerning the Person of Christ
were: He was a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. Considering the enormous claims
that Christ made, it would be impossible simply to designate Him a ‘good
teacher.’ He claimed to be much more than a teacher.” Paul Enns
