Our God and Saviour,
Our Lord, Our Hope
I Timothy 1:1-2
by John A. Kohler, III
In the beginning verses of I Timothy, as in many of his
other epistles, the Apostle Paul almost immediately exalts and magnifies
Jesus Christ. He does so by pointing to the fact that Jesus Christ is our
God and Saviour, our Lord, and our hope.
I. Jesus Christ is God our Saviour.
A. He was Paul’s God and Saviour, Timothy’s God and Saviour,
and He is our God and Saviour, too, if we are trusting in Him, and Him
alone, to deliver us from our sins and the consequences of our sins.
B. Paul refers to Jesus Christ as “God our Saviour” in
Titus 1:3 also, where he mentions that Jesus had called him to preach God’s
Word (Acts 9:15-16).
II. Jesus Christ is our Lord.
A. He was Paul’s Lord, Timothy’s Lord, and He is our Lord,
too, if we really and truly belong to Him.
B. If we call Him our Lord, then we must do what He commands
(Mat. 7:21-23; Lk. 6:46-49; Jn. 13:13-17).
III. Jesus Christ is our Hope.
A. He was Paul’s hope, Timothy’s hope, and He is our hope,
too, if we are genuinely trusting in Him. He does not just give us hope;
He Himself is our hope. He is our hope in the sense that He is coming again
for us, and we shall be with Him and like Him (Acts 28:20; Rom. 8:24-25;
I Cor. 15:19; Col. 1:3-5; I Thes. 1:2-4; 5:8-10; II Thes. 2:16-17; Tit.
1:1-2; 2:13; 3:7; Heb. 6:18-20; I Pet. 1:3-4; 3:15; I Jn. 3:2-3).
B. Unbelievers have no hope for the future; they are absolutely
and utterly hopeless (Eph. 2:12; I Thes. 4:13).
| “Those preachers who tell sinners they may be saved
without forsaking their idols, without repenting, without surrendering
to the Lordship of Christ, are as erroneous and dangerous as others who
insist that salvation is by works and that heaven must be earned by our
own efforts.” Arthur W. Pink |
