The Christian's Good
Works
by John A. Kohler, III
The good works done by a Christian are not the cause of
his salvation, but the confirmation of it. They are not the root of his
salvation, but the fruit of his salvation.
- The Christian’s good works give other men a just reason
to glorify God the Father (Mat. 5:16; I Pet. 2:12).
- The Christian’s good works were ordained by God in eternity
past (Eph. 2:10).
- The Christian’s good works cause him to be truly rich
in this world (I Tim. 6:17-18).
- The Christian’s good works are produced in his life through
the application of the Holy Scriptures (II Tim. 3:16-17).
- The Christian’s good works are to serve as an example
for others and to make his enemies ashamed (Tit. 2:6-8).
- The Christian’s good works are to be done with zeal (Tit.
2:14).
- The Christian’s good works are to be carefully maintained
(Tit. 3:8,14).
- The Christian’s good works are to be encouraged by other
Christians and motivated by love (Heb. 10:24).
- The Christian’s good works are a visible, tangible manifestation
of the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22-23).
| “The good works of the Christian life were ordained
of God at the same time our election took place (Eph. 2:10). They were
carefully prepared and designed for God’s chosen people before the world
began. These good works make God’s elect ‘look’ like God’s people. When
God chose us ‘in Him before the foundation of the world’ (Eph. 1:4), the
‘good works’ of the Christian life were automatically involved.” Robert
