The Doctrines of Grace Variously Stated
  • As a result of Adam’s fall, the entire human race is affected; all humanity is dead in trespasses and sin. Man is unable to save himself.
  • Because man is dead in sin, he is unable to initiate response to God; therefore, in eternity past God elected certain people to salvation. Election and predestination are unconditional; they are not based on man’s response.
  • Because God determined that certain ones should be saved as a result of God’s unconditional election, He determined that Christ should die for the elect. All whom God has elected and Christ died for will be saved.
  • Those whom God elected and Christ died for, God draws to Himself through irresistible grace. God makes man willing to come to Him. When God calls, man responds.
  • The precise ones God has elected and drawn to Himself through the Holy Spirit will persevere in faith. None whom God has elected will be lost; they are eternally secure. (Paul Enns)

  • Fallen man in his natural state lacks all power to believe the gospel, just as he lacks all power to believe the law, despite all external inducements that may be extended to him.
  • God’s election is a free, sovereign, unconditional choice of sinners, as sinners, to be redeemed by Christ, given faith and brought to glory.
  • The redeeming work of Christ had as its end and goal the salvation of the elect.
  • The work of the Holy Spirit in bringing people to faith never fails to achieve its object.
  • Believers are kept in faith and grace by the unconquerable power of God till they come to glory. (J. I. Packer)

  • Total Depravity refers to the fallen state of the natural man who inherits a sin nature at conception. Every sinner is spiritually dead, with no capacity or desire for spiritual things. He is incapable in and of himself to come to a saving knowledge of Christ apart from the work of the Holy Spirit in regeneration.
  • Unconditional Election refers to the sovereign choice of some men unto salvation by God the Father, before the foundation of the world, not according to any foreseen merit or faith that he saw in the sinner, but according to his own good pleasure and purpose of grace.
  • Limited Atonement or Particular Redemption refers to the teaching of the specific intent and extent of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. He died only for the elect. He came to redeem and reconcile only those whom God chose. He acted as substitute and surety only for those whom the Father had given Him before the world began.
  • Irresistible Grace or Effectual Calling refers to the fact that all whom the Father elected and the Son died for will assuredly come to salvation through the power and work of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. When the Spirit draws in the effectual call the sinner most willingly comes to Christ, as it is impossible to resist the will and power of God.
  • Preservation and Perseverance of the Saints refers to the fact that all the elect are preserved from final apostasy in Hell by the power of God, and that all true children of God who have been changed in regeneration will persevere in holiness. (Tom Ross)

  • All men and women, since the fall of our father Adam, are born in a state of spiritual death. Because of their evil nature, they cannot and will not turn to God. They cannot of themselves obey God or exercise faith in Christ.
  • From before creation, God chose many of Adam’s fallen race to salvation. Those whom He chose deserve God’s wrath as much as the others. However, God chose them in Christ and determined to save them, and this He most certainly will do.
  • The Lord Jesus Christ died as the Substitute for God’s elect and by His blood made atonement for their sins. He redeemed them from the curse of the law and obtained eternal redemption for them. By His death, Christ infallibly and justly secured the salvation of those that God the Father gave Him to represent.
  • God the Holy Spirit effectually calls every chosen, redeemed sinner to Christ. This He does by the faithful preaching of the Gospel. He brings them to life and turns them to Christ in repentance and faith. By His almighty grace, God makes them new creatures in Christ.
  • God keeps all whom He chose and redeemed by Christ and calls them by the Holy Spirit. These He keeps and seals by His grace. He never takes away the grace that He gives. He never retracts the faith that He gives them. Those who are born of God can never perish. They will persevere because they are “kept by the power of God through faith.” (Author Unknown)

  • All men are sinners by nature and are dead to spiritual things while in their natural state.
  • All who are to possess spiritual life were individually chosen by God to receive such life; moreover, this choice was not based upon any merit seen or foreseen in the elected; rather, this election was motivated by the sovereign love of God.
  • The saving benefits of Christ’s death were intended for the elect only; furthermore, His death was alone sufficient to secure their salvation.
  • All of God’s elect will be quickened by the Spirit of God at some point in their natural lives.
  • The blood of Christ is sufficient both to procure and secure salvation of all for whom it was shed. Therefore, all of the elect will finally be saved. (Primitive Baptist Abstract)

  • All men are totally depraved because of sin. Everyone is born into the world, therefore, without spiritual ability to save himself and is deserving of God’s wrath.
  • God is not willing to let the whole human race go to hell and has, from before the foundation of the world, chosen individual sinners to be saved. This choice is not based on any merit or justification found in the individual but is sovereignly exercise by God solely out of His grace and love.
  • Those who are elected by God were given to Jesus Christ before the foundation of the world so that He should redeem them from sin. This He did in His earthly ministry by offering Himself as a substitute in His people’s place. His death on the cross ac ally accomplished their redemption.
  • God effectively applies to all of His elect that redemption which His Son secured on the cross. He does this by drawing and effectually calling these by the gospel so that they freely come to repent of sin and believe in Christ.
  • Those who have been so chosen, redeemed and reborn will persevere in the faith and thus are eternally secure. (Thomas Ascol)

The Five Points of Arminianism
  • Human depravity has not rendered man incapable of savingly exercising his will to trust in Christ for salvation.
  • God’s election is conditioned upon His divine foresight of faith in certain men whom God, then, in turn, designates as His elect.
  • Christ’s atonement was exactly the same for everyone with no discrimination whatever, rendering all men savable, but actually guaranteeing the salvation of none.
  • God’s grace is resistible in the final sense so that man can ultimately thwart God’s purpose to save him.
  • Final salvation is possible for believers, but ultimate victory rests with their continuance in faith, so that final apostasy may be possible for the once saved. (Kenneth Good)
