The Total Depravity and Inability of the Natural Man

by John A. Kohler, III

  • The natural man has no ability to come to the Lord Jesus Christ unless God the Father effectually draws him (Jn. 6:44,65).
  • The natural man has absolutely no spiritual life (Rom. 5:12; Eph. 2:1).
  • The natural man has a corrupt heart that defiles him (Mat. 15:18-20).
  • The natural man has a carnal mind that is enmity against God, not subject to God’s law, and wholly incapable of being subject to God’s law (Rom. 8:7).
  • The natural man has no ability to please God (Rom. 8:8).
  • The natural man has a heart that is deceitful above all things, desperately wicked, and wholly incapable of being known by man (Jer. 17:9).
  • The natural man has no ability to do good, to understand spiritual things, or to seek God (Ps. 14:1-3; Jn. 3:3; Rom. 3:11-12; I Cor. 2:14).
  • The natural man has no inherent righteousness (Rom. 3:10).
  • The natural man has a defiled mind and conscience (Tit. 1:15).
  • The natural man has no inherent goodness and is wholly incapable of performing that which is good in God’s sight (Rom. 7:18).
  • The natural man has no ability to love others with God’s love (I Jn. 3:14).
  • The natural man has blinded eyes and a hardened heart and is wholly incapable of believing the gospel (Jn. 12:39-40).
  • The natural man is lost and has the gospel hidden unto him because Satan has blinded his mind (II Cor. 4:3-4).
  • The natural man is accustomed to doing evil and has no more ability to do good than an Ethiopian has to change his skin or a leopard his spots (Jer. 13:23).
  • The natural man is shapen in iniquity and is a sinner from the moment of his conception (Ps. 51:5).
  • The natural man is estranged from God from the womb and goes astray as soon as he is born, speaking lies (Ps. 58:3).
  • The natural man is unclean and is wholly incapable of doing anything righteous in God’s sight (Isa. 64:6).
  • The natural man loves darkness rather than light because his deeds are evil (Jn. 3:19).
  • The natural man is by nature a child of wrath who has his conversation in the lusts of the flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind (Eph. 2:3).
  • The natural man’s every imagination of the thoughts of his heart is only evil continually (Gen. 6:5).The natural man is an unclean thing and is wholly incapable of producing anything clean (Job 14:4).
