Christ's Sheep -- John 10:22-30

by John A. Kohler, III

I. Christ’s sheep come to believe in Him (vv. 25-26).

    A. His sheep are His elect people.

    B. They come to trust in, rely upon, and place their confidence in Him and Him alone for salvation.

II. Christ’s sheep hear His voice (v. 27).

    A. They hear the sound, meaning, and message of His voice (I Cor. 2:14). The on-elect goats do not hear His voice in this sense (Jn. 8:47).

    B. Christ’s sheep do not hear or follow the voice of strangers (vv. 4-5).

III. Christ’s sheep are known by Him (v. 27).

    A. They enjoy an intimate, personal relationship with their Shepherd.

    B. The non-elect goats are not known by the Shepherd (Mat. 7:21-23).

IV. Christ’s sheep follow Him (v. 27).

    A. They not only should follow Him, they do follow Him, however imperfectly.

    B. They follow Him all the way home to Heaven.

V. Christ’s sheep are given eternal life by Him (v. 28).

    A. It is His gift to them (the gift of Himself), not a reward they earn or deserve.

    B. It is not merited and cannot be demerited.

    C. It is never-ending eternal life, not temporary life.

VI. Christ’s sheep shall never perish nor be plucked out of His hand (v. 28).

    A. They might backslide at some point, but they cannot and will not perish as long as the Good Shepherd lives.

    B. Those who say they can perish call Christ a liar.

VII. Christ’s sheep were given to Him by God the Father (v. 29).

    A. They were given to Him in eternity past (Jn. 6:37; 17:2,6,9,11-12,24; Eph. 1:4; II Thes. 2:13; II Tim. 1:9).

    B. They come to know Him as Lord and Saviour in time (Jn. 6:44,65).
