My First Ever Buck  (2001)

About My Buck
My name is Jack, and I am fifteen years old.  My family has a farm in Georgia in which holds a couple of big bucks.  All summer of 2001, I had been watching deer with my Deer Cam.  Well, opening morning, I saw five does yet no bucks.  However, I was not worried because it was a perfect day except for the slight wind.  That afternoon, I hunted the same portable that I had gone to that morning because I had caught a couple big bucks in velvet with my camera.  About thirty minutes after I was in my stand, the first two deer came out.  They ran out of the woods into the clover field and fed for about twenty minutes.  Then I put up my binoculars and saw a pair of legs in the woods.  I thought it was a buck because it was much taller than the other two deer.  I was getting excited because it came behind the does (like a buck in rut), but then it turned around and went back into the woods.  I think it probably smelled me because the wind was blowing.  After a couple more minutes of feeding, the two does left the field.  About fifteen minutes later, a big doe came out and the two does came behind her.  It ended up being that the two does before were fawns, and the deer I saw in the woods was the mother of the two.  The three does stayed out in the field until I made my shot.
At about 6:15 p.m., I heard a big commotion in the woods to my left.  I glanced toward the sound, and I saw two deer running through the woods, but I could not tell what they were.  A doe came out of the woods, walked across the dirt road, walked through some thick brush, and went into the clover field.  I watched her for about a minute and then heard another sound.  By the time I looked at the road, a buck was walking out of the woods.  He was the other deer that I heard, and he had been chasing the doe.  When the buck came out, I thought it was a little 8-point, but then when it looked down the road and I saw its spread, I knew it was a keeper.  He kept going and then he stopped in the thick stuff.  That gave me time to raise my .243 and look at him through my binoculars.  During this time, he was watching the doe he had been chasing.  By the time he started to move, I knew I was going to shoot him.  Right before he made it into the field, the doe saw me shaking like a leaf, and she trotted off into another field to my right.  He paid no attention to her spooking and just walked into the field.  Until he angled away from me, I thought that he did not have brow tines.  Once I realized he did, and he became broadside to me, I took my shot.  I made a perfect shot.  The doe and the fawns did not run away until I got out of my stand.  As soon as I made it to the ground, I called my dad on the radio, and told him I got a 10-point.  My dad rushed over from his stand and when he got to me, I was sitting by my deer.  When we finally got a good look at him, we figured out he had a perfect rack except for a little chip on his left brow tine.  Later, while my family and some guests were talking, my dad informed me that when I called him on the radio, I was mumbling so much he could not understand me.
Overall, I have been hunting for three years, this was my fourth deer and my first buck.  My buck was a perfect 10-pointer, it had a 17 ½ inch inside spread, its tallest points were about 8 inches, it had pretty good mass, and he weighed 220 pounds. Also when I scored his rack, the total number of inches was about 125 or so inches.

Deer Cam
First of all if you do not have a Deer Cam and you have some questions about your deer population, you need a Deer Cam.  We recieved our Deer Cam about 3 years ago for a gift.  In the first year, I caught some deer on it that I had no clue lived on our property.  I am still following them through our property and watching them grow.  If you get one it will be a great investment.  As you can see on my trophy page, it has helped us get a nice deer for the past 3 years.
