Where to Look
I personally like to walk around the woods in the spring and look for deer antlers
that have shed. I have found about 10 sheds in the last 2 years, and I have found 2
pairs of sheds. I have noticed that the best places to search for antlers are on well
worn trails. If you look on trails, look on those leading to and from bedding and feeding areas. Also you should be sure to look along the edges of fields, along powerlines, along pipelines, and fence crossings. If you notice any trails going through thick brush, you should be sure to look there because when the deer go through there, the antlers will bump against the bushes and will knock off. If you are looking in brush, be sure to also look in the brush because if the antlers fall off in it, the antlers sometimes don't make it to the ground. Also when you are seaching along trails, be sure to look to the side because when antlers fall off, they sometimes fall off to the side. If you have any fences, look around them because when a deer jumps over the fence, antlerssometimes fall off with the impact of the deer landing. Also antlers sometimes come off when the deer go under the fence.
Tips For Shed Hunting
* Younger Bucks usually will shed last
* Antlers usually will drop when the deer are moving.
* If you find a single side, searching in a 50-100 yard radius usually
will give you enough area to find the other side.
* Keep a log of time and dates for when and where you find deer antlers.
Deer will usually will shed around the same time every year.
* Sheds that you find will give you a good idea of what caliber of bucks are
in the area and what survived the previous season.
Some Devices to Find the Antlers For You
(If you use some of these, I am not responsible if a deer is injured because of it)
First of all I have had no problem with any deer being injured by these devices
but I have heard that sometimes deer can be injured by some of these.
*The first device that I have heard of is a professionally made antler trap. If you would
like to look at this device, you can go to the following website:
www.antlertrap.net
I have ordered one of these, and I will tell ya'll how it works in the future. It will be next
spring since that is when the deer shed.
*The second device that I have heard of is to drive heavy wooden stakes into the
ground in the form of a "V". Wrap wire around the stakes, yet leave the front open.
Poor corn or deer feed in the corner of the "V" and the antlers will get tangled in the
wire. However, I would not use this device because if the antlers are not ready to
come off, the deer could become stuck and could starve to death or die of another
factor.
*The last device that I have heard of is a device that I have heard is danger free.
Another plus of this one is that it does not take a lot of supplies. All you need is 12
steel fence posts, wire, and bait. First, you put 4 posts in the ground about 3 feet
apart making a box. Next, take the other 4 posts and tie them up against the other 4
posts about a foot and a half above the ground. Then take the last 4 posts and tie
them across the top so that the deer can not get the food through the top of the box.
Now you are done and you have a antler trap. Even though I have not used this type
before, I have heard that it works great! Also since the only wire used is to tie the bars
up, it is almost danger free.
