This 1957 GMC 4801-385 was built by General Motors Trucks
and Coach Division for San Diego Transit. The coach originally was
painted dark and light green and white. Sometime back in the 1960's,
it was repainted light green and white. 517 was retired from service
sometime back in the 1980's. The 517 was sold to a Yuma Bus Company in
Arizona and ran for about a couple of years then was abandoned in 1982
on the lot for at least 16 years. Andy Goddard bought the 517 and he
learned that San Diego Transit wouldn't support so he sold to Chris
Stauffer and Richard A. Youhill. The 517 was restored by it's deaf
owner Chris Stauffer. A help from Gaylen Henrich, who is mechanic for
San Diego Transit.

The 517
Maintenance
Old Message
A matter of time to have the 517 repaired. 517 was planning to be in Williams,
California for repair have been put on hold at least for now. The engine already
started and sounded great. Transmission seemed to be fine and it did hit the road.
All 6 tires already replaced. However, it was abandoned on the lot for years.
The front exterior area where it's badly damaged will need to be repaired and many
of the windows will need to be replaced. Front and rear doors need parts in order
to operate correctly. The exterior and interior will have paint jobs. Repairing the
seats is still a question. The owner of the 517 wanted it look originally San Diego
Transit.
New Message
Sadly, the owners had to sell this fleet to the PBM (Pacific Bus Museum).
Unfortunately, not what we have expected the PBM plan to restore this fleet. Their
expection to have an opportunity to acquire a complete and operable GM "Old look"
as a back up or reserve bus for the Nile train shuttle.
