Our BERNESSER - BIERNESSER - BIRNESSER Family began in Sollingen, a village near Karlsruhe in Baden-Wurttemburg, Germany in the 1500s. In the mid-1800s, two Birnesser brothers moved from their ancestral home to Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, and their cousin moved with his family to Algeria.
Anton Birnesser came to Pine Creek in Indiana Township, north of Pittsburgh, about 1859 and married a local girl, Philomena Stehle, and together they raised fifteen children there. He changed the spelling of his name to BIERNESSER and all but one of his sons followed his example. Anton's eldest son Andrew changed the spelling of his name back to the original BIRNESSER, and all his sons followed his example.
Anton's brother Johannes Birnesser came to Sharpsburg, Pennsylvania about 1873 with his wife Louisa and four small children. He Americanized his name to John BERNESSER, and all his sons followed that example.
A cousin Leopold Birnesser left Sollingen with his family for America, but was robbed in France of his passage money and so settled in Algeria instead. His descendants returned to France and live near Orleans, just south of Paris, today.
And, of course, several brothers and cousins stayed in the Baden area and their descendants live near there today.
