Tribute to Dream
Our "Dreamer Girl"
American Staffordshire Terrier born August 20, 1982 -- passed to the Bridge on October 16, 1998.  Beloved companion, protector, playmate,
teacher, and most of all, "Friend."
She was 16 yrs. old when she had to leave us.
Our beautiful, strong girl is missed more than words can say.
Dream joined our family when she was eight months old.  From the beginning she was a perfect fit, willing to play whatever role was asked of her.  Our three children grew up enjoying her "ready for anything" attitude.  She was gentle and loving and withstood their roughhousing without a blink.  She was there with a warm lick and a soft nuzzle to comfort their every childhood disappointment.
She loved walks in the park, swimming in the lake, car rides to anywhere, vacations at the beach, and resting in front of the TV.  She loved to run in the back yard, to chase the squirrels, and to be Queen of her domain.  She loved meeting new people and playing with other pooches.  She was forever patient, trustful, and loving.  You see, she never knew of the vicious reputation her  breed carried ---- we never told her.
By age 14, she was slowing down and we began to make accomodations for her physical limitations.  Walks became shorter and included frequent breaks.  She would often need help to  get into and out of the car.   Now, she was often content to sit by the side and watch the others play.   And we began to realize our time together was becoming limited.
Dream playing "Rudolf" Christmas of '97
with 12 yr. old pal, Rudy.  This was her last Christmas with us.
Approaching 16, her muscle tone was rapidly deteriorating and our vet had no more remedies.  Her apparent desire to enjoy normal activities, and to continue, what she considered her family responsibilities, kept her striving beyond belief.  As her mobility decreased, she remained determined to be with her family and would drag herself from one room to another when her hind legs would not cooperate.
Her strong will and determination gave us hope that she could overcome this  obstacle as she had overcome so many others in the past.  We helped her to manuever around the house and used a sling to enable her to continue to enjoy periods outdoors.   And we hoped and prayed that with time she would improve.  But it was not to be.
One beautiful autumn afternoon I looked at her, laying outside in the grass, watching the other dogs run and play.  There was a sadness in her eyes that I could no longer ignore.  We made arrangements with the vet to end her suffering and spent the remainder of that day and the next morning saying our goodbys.  She was a brave and trusting girl to the end and will be forever missed.
Here's Dream resting after a workout with Italian Greyhound, Willy.  Even at age fourteen, on her good days, 2 yr. old Willy had his work cut out keeping up with her!
Pictures from an earlier period:
"Whew!  After a full day's activity, it's nice to stretch out for a nap with a buddy!"
Dream at the age of 6, playing in the snow with the kids.  Living in NC, winter weather is a treat to be fully enjoyed -- and quickly -- since it never lasts  long!
        "The Last Battle "
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
